"Tex-Mex" is a street-level tour of this border world, through cantinas, prisons, festivals, and even brothels where Tex-Mex music grows. Caught in performance and intimate conversation are Lydia Mendoza, one of the last great corrido singers, whose career stretches back to the 1930's; Flaco Jimenez, the old style button accordion player who injected a Tex-Mex flavor into the music of Ry Cooder and Paul Simon; political firebrand Little Joe Hernandez and many other great performers of norteno, corrida and other Tex-Mex styles. The border region that runs for 1,000 miles along the Rio Grande River makes up a distinct culture that straddles both the countries and traditions of Texas and Mexico. A land that is cursed with violence and drug trafficking is also blessed with an extremely rich culture that has rarely been mined for mainstream consumption. This fascinating documentary takes an unprecedented look at the indigenous music of the region, which ranges from Norteno and Corrido to infusion in more mainstream genres by artists like Paul Simon and Ry Cooder. $10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold ...
