How much is too much of a good thing? Depends where you stand on the thing to begin with. Such is the case with Stereolab. Detractors who were never moved by the group's sound to begin with will lament the fact that little new ground is broken on SOUND-DUST, especially after hints at new directions were dropped on 1999's COBRA PHASES album. It's true that this Gallic/British/American collective sticks to their usual blend of bubbling analog synthesizers, interlocking marimba and vibraphone ostinatos, odd-metered, cyclical rhythms, and Brigitte Bardot-with-a-Master's-Degree vocals.
However, anyone who's attracted to the band's still-distinctive (despite leagues of imitators), retro-futuristic electro-lounge sound will be pleased that the group stood it's ground, dispensing large dollops of frothy joy on their first official long-player of the 21st century they've spent so much time foreshadowing. Besides, in the long view, the horn charts and sophisticated arrangements do show marked evolution from the group's Velvet Underground-reverent beginnings. To borrow the title of another British band's album, "enjoy the melodic sunshine."

brilliant Definitely their best album since Dots and Loops, Sound-Dust is brilliant from beginning to end. Clever, catchy and getting better each time you listen to it, this is how beautiful and intelligent pop music can be. Submitted by a reviewer (Gent, Flanders, Belgium) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This album is amazing This album is great, I highly reccomend it. I did not find it one bit boring. Maybe some loser that does no a thing about music and is happy with britney spears might not like it but anyone else would. I exspecialy love songs like "Hallucinex". Boring? Not really. Stereolab's musical style is repetitive and certainly some of their stuff which is composed of endless special audio effects can be tedious. But this? Very little of this is monotonous. They have a knack for interesting riffs and this album has its fair share of them. They have their own style which might not be to your taste, but I can't agree it has no musical worth or that stereolab have failed to come up with an impressive few tracks. Boring. More utterly dull turgidity from the band
who have made utterly dull, boring, turgidity their own territory. Only for the ultra committed. Submitted by a reviewer (Neasden, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sound-Dust album
$8.39 Stereolab have always been fascinated with a wide range of textures, which, under their special care, come together in a droney, poppy, spacey sound all their own. In their hands, the monotony of mid-'70s Krautrock, the hi-fi effects of so-called space-age bachelor-pad ...
| | Stereolab Dots & Loops CD (1997)
Sound-Dust CD music
$9.09 Is the sound of Stereolab's Moogs, electric keyboards, and strummed guitars starting to infiltrate mainstream pop? Or is the band itself getting continually better at its electronic bubblegum grooves? Whatever the reason, each Stereolab album is that much catchier than the one before. The music arrives ...

Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE ...

| | Doctors Of Madness Figments Of Emancipation CD (1976) (Import) United Kingdom
Sound-Dust music CDs
$16.29 Starved for affection, yet marching deliriously on, the most critically cudgeled British band of 1976 released their second album just six months after their debut Late Night Movies, All Night Brainstorms, almost as if they'd never read a word that had been written about them. And certainly as if they never cared about any of them. Figments of Emancipation is so much the son of its predecessor that the two could have been recorded in tandem. They were certainly written so -- most of the album was present in the Doctors of Madness' live set even before they recorded Brainstorms. Whereas that album haunted the city ...
