This Santa Barbara foursome has its pop-punk aesthetic down cold. They should; they spent plenty of time touring in support of their first two indie records before landing on Ultimatum/Artemis and releasing START STATIC. Their sound is a canny mix of contemporary pop-punk and late-'70s new wave. Accordingly, the songs exult in catchy choruses, herky-jerky riffs, and rhythms alternately bouncy and rampaging. Moments like the opening guitar lines of "Saying Goodbye" and the irresistible chorus of opening tune "You're the One" show that for all their punky energy these lads have pop smarts aplenty. "Crashing Down" and "Changed My Name" show that Sugarcult is far from incapable of ballads, and the closing hidden track even gets a bit jazzy. Possibilities clearly abound.
Contains a hidden track after "I Changed My Mind."
Recorded between March and April 2001.

Sugarcult Start Static Songs Start Static Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Sugarcult starts off with a bang! this CD has shown me some of the greatest music i have ever heard. Start Static is Sugarcult's first and in my opinion best CD. the songs get to the chorus fast so there not to long, but they catch on fast. the lyrics are heavy with songs like Pretty Girl and Saying Goodbye. yet they find away to liven the mood with songs like Daddy's Little Defect and Bouncing Off The Walls. compared to Sugarcult's second CD Palm Trees And Power Lines, this music is fast, energetic, and straight to the point...something most bands cant do anymore. so that is why i gave Sugarcult's debut album Start Static 5 stars. not the 1st album... I must say that this cd is, in effect, a great compilation of big songs, and I really love it, but isn't really the first Sugarcult's album... Their first work is called "Wrap Me up In Plastic", but is not easy to find it right now. Bye! Submitted by Dídac (Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Buy this! Couldn't believe this is their FIRST cd As I listened to this cd, I couldn't believe this should be their first. It sounds like they've already played together for YEARS. Every track is great. The best are: Pretty Girl, Hate Every Beautiful Day, Stuck In America, and of course Bouncing Off The Walls. I also highly recommend Sugarcult's second album "Palm Trees And Power Lines". Buy this CD, you won't be disappointed! (By the way, there are many bands that are a lot more famous right now but compared to Sugarcult they sound like bullsh*t) Submitted by alina (Germany) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Start Static album
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ...

$14.95 Ronnie Scott will always be best remembered as the owner of England's most famous jazz club, Ronnie Scott's. However he was also quite significant as one of England's top musicians of the bebop era and the 1950s. The tenor saxophonist is featured throughout this CD on some of his best recordings of the 1946-1953 period. Rather than a complete reissue of his early titles, this double-CD gives listeners a fine overview of Scott's most important playing period. He is featured as a sideman with Ted Heath, Jack Parnell, the Esquire Five, Alan Dean, Arnold Ross and several specially assembled all-star groups in addition to leading his own combos and orchestra. While Scott, who at various times recalls Lester Young, Flip Phillips and Dexter Gordon, is the solo star throughout, there are also many fine spots for quite a few other talented British players including Jack Parnell on vibes, altoist Johnny Dankworth, trumpeter Kenny Baker, a young Victor Feldman on vibes and piano, trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar and altoists Spike Robinson (decades before he emerged in the U.S. on tenor) and Derek Humble. It is particularly interesting hearing how the music of the Great Britain jazz scene paralleled that in the United States, perhaps trailing two years behind during this period. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
