The duet album PARIS BLUES finds pianist Gil Evans joining soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy on a program of seven improvisations including a version of Charles Mingus' signature tune "Goodbye Pork-pie hat."

Two veteran avant-gardists get together for a deceptively casual session and wind up with a contemporary jazz masterpiece--one reason being that Gil Evans and Steve Lacy were shrewd enough to choose superior tunes by Mingus (four pieces!) and Duke ("Paris Blues") instead of relying on a few perfunctory heads to noodle away on. Also, the special timbral blend of electric piano and soprano sax (Lacy is still the greatest player since Bechet) lends the sound a hip modern sheen, striking even in 1987. PARIS BLUES is just more proof, if any was needed, that these two cats just never stopped growing.

With Gil Evans on piano (electric and acoustic) & Steve Lacy on soprano saxophone.

Recorded at Family Sound Studio, Paris, France on November 30 & December 1, 1987. Includes liner notes by Steve Lacy.

Personnel: Gil Evans (piano, electric piano); Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone).

Producers: Jean-Jacques Pussiau, Francois Lemaire.

3 stars A rare beauty by artists, not producers
Heard a snippet of this on KCSM.org radio (24 hour jazz) and subsequently went looking for this CD and glad to find it at CDUniverse. I am struck by the sense that Evans and Lacy are doing their music unfettered by market considerations, and thus their album, Paris Blues, is an elegant flowing conversation of uncommon beauty. It's getting alot of play-time on my sound system.

4 stars A minimalist gem from Evans and Lacy
Recorded shortly before his death in 1988, this collaboration with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy finds master musician/arranger Gil Evans turning in some of his finest, most subtle playing, mostly on Fender Rhodes electric piano. The choice of material favors Mingus, and one of the CD's highlights is a beautiful and darkly moody reworking of «Goodbye Pork Pie Hat». There is a profound chemistry between these two artists, and the music they create is both minimalist and lyrical. The sound recording is first-rate also. This one's a beauty.

Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here -- "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Victoria" -- and they're mercifully absent from the slower tunes, songs that benefit from the gentle layered harmonies. In comparison to most orchestral and choral rock albums, these arrangements are subtle and sensitive, providing a nice counterpart for the surprising dose of rock & roll, both things that make The Kinks Choral Collection one of the better entries in this ...

Paris Blues
CD $6.25  4.6 stars Top 500
Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon. The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's ...

For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings ...

House Of The Rising Sun
Idris Muhammad House Of The Rising Sun CD  (1976) Japan

Paris Blues
CD $18.99
Idris Muhammad's House of the Rising Sun is a legendary soul-jazz album, and for good reason. First there's the fact that, Grady Tate notwithstanding, Idris Muhammad is easily the greatest of all soul-jazz drummers. Next, it is revealed that label boss and producer Creed Taylor was at his most inspired here, and wasn't afraid to err on the rhythm and blues side of the jazz equation. The material is top-notch, and David Matthews, who orchestrated and arranged this date with the exception of one track -- "Sudan" was written by Muhammad and Tom Harrell, and Harrell arranged it -- was on fire. As a bandleader, Muhammad is shockingly effective. Not because one could ever doubt his ability, but because of his reputation as one of the great studio drummers in jazz. Finally, this is the single greatest lineup in Kudu's history, and features the talents of Don Grolnick, Eric Gale, Will Lee, Roland Hanna, Joe Beck, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker, Hugh McCracken, Bob Berg, Fred Wesley, Patti Austin, and a dozen others playing their asses off. From the title track which opens the album, with Austin reaching the breaking point in her delivery, to the stunningly funky groove in Ashford and Simpson's "Hard to Face the Music," to the minor key funk of the Chopin-adapted theme in "Theme for New York City," to "Sudan"'s triple-timed drums and killer Eastern-tinged hooks, and a read of the Meters' "Hey Pocky A-Way," with Eric Gale's dirty finger poppin' bass atop McCracken's bluesed-out slide work, this is a steaming, no let-up album. Add to this a gorgeous version of the Ary Barroso Brazilian jazz classic "Bahia," and you have the set for a classic jazz album. But the complete disregard for the political correctness of "Jazz" itself, in order to get the deeply funky and soulful grooves across, is what makes this set so damn special and even spiritual in its inspiration. Jazz purists lost all credibility when they slagged this one off, caught as they were in tainted, even racist views of the past that made no ...
