Like the myriad other Riddim Driven albums released by VP, the Liquid volume features an ensemble of reggae vocalists singing over a given producer's riddim, in this case producer Jeremy Harding. Though the production is generally top-notch, it lumbers on for the entire CD, often getting monotonous toward the conclusion. Thus, the vocalists are left to engage you, and since they come and go swiftly, your patience is often tested throughout the listening experience. Regardless, the series has proven successful for VP because many listeners enjoy the seamless beats and the variety of vocalists. ~ Jason Birchmeier

One of the most well known figures in pop/R&B-leaning jazz, saxophonist David Sanborn had a highly successful stint with the Warner Bros. label from the mid-1970s to the mid-'80s. This collection draws 16 tracks from that period in Sanborn's career, with songs ranging from the funky "Chicago Song" to the smooth "Lesley Ann" to the spare, delicate "Lotus Blossom." This reggae classic, long heralded as a cornerstone of the DJ genre, was remastered and reissued in 2006. Along with U-Roy, Big Youth was one of the most influential DJs on the Jamaican scene in the 1970s, helping to develop and popularize the tradition of singers "toasting" over records (a tradition that bears a direct lineage to dancehall and rap).
