From the breezy pop melody of opening cut "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight" to the near-rap delivery of "I Wanna Talk About Me," it's clear that country traditionalism is not high on Toby Keith's list of priorities for PULL MY CHAIN. While this won't make Keith any friends among the hardcore honky-tonk crowd, that's not his audience to begin with. Those who like their country mixed with pop-rock (the aforementioned album-opener), soul ("I Can't Take You Anywhere"), and delicate, piano-based ballads worthy of Elton John ("Yesterday's Rain," "You Didn't Have as Much to Lose") will find much to admire about Keith's eclecticism. Tying it all together is Keith's friendly, guy-next-door voice, equally able to portray humor, lust, heartache, and pure exuberance. Incidentally, there's more to than Elton John connection than you might think; EJ's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin contributed to closing rocker "Gimme 8 Seconds."

| | Toby Keith How Do You Like Me Now?! CD (1999)
Pull My Chain CD music
$12.59 Toby Keith is a "stealth" country star: you don't see him on magazine covers or chatting with Jay Leno, yet he's still managed to score an impressive string of hits. But those fans that are clued in to Keith's music will love this, his debut for DreamWorks Nashville. Like his previous albums, it showcases Keith's smooth, powerful baritone voice and his considerable songwriting talents. The clever title track is every singer's revenge fantasy: showing the girl who ignored you back in high school that you did ...

Pull My Chain songs
$12.59 If you pay attention to the mass media, the ostensible "big news" on UNLEASHED is the opening track, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," an anthemic song of vengeful, post-9/11 patriotism whose subtle-as-a-flying mallet lyrics and delivery make Barry ("Eve of Destruction") McGuire sound like James Taylor. Far more palatable are the 11 songs that follow, from the gutsy, churning ...
| | Toby Keith Honkytonk University CD (2005)
Pull My Chain album
$12.39 After Toby Keith achieved household-name status with two chart-topping albums full of defiant songs and right-wing politics, listeners may have expected more of the same. With 2005's HONKYTONK UNIVERSITY, however, Keith matches his outlaw aspirations to a set of tunes that remind his audience that he is a country singer first and a media icon second.
The opening "Honkytonk U" is an autobiographical tune that sounds like an outtake from Waylon Jennings's HONKY TONK HEROES, ...
