"Still" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "My Kind Of Girl" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Super-smooth R&B star Brian McKnight made a major name for himself throughout the '90s by purveying a singular, immediately recognizable brand of romantic R&B. While he hasn't jumped stylistic ship per se on SUPERHERO, McKnight has taken the opportunity afforded by fame and autonomy to stretch out a bit in whatever sonic direction happens to suit him. For instance, the opening cut is an all-instrumental orchestral interlude that sounds more like the introduction to a Steven Spielberg movie than to an R&B album. The title cut stands out not only for its quirky lyrics (which go so far as to detail the familial lineage of Superman), but for its hard rock guitar hooks, which betray a hitherto-unheard branch of McKnight's musical interests. Despite these forays beyond the usual fare, however, longtime fans will be heartened to know that there are plenty of slow, romantic sizzlers on SUPERHERO, and that McKnight's soulful falsetto can still light a fire as unfailingly as on his previous recordings.

Rolling Stone (10/11/01, pp.92,94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Fairly generic neosoul, but his breathy upper range brings a vulnerability to his polished melismas....The singer's priorities - 1) Tonight's the night, and 2) We'll take it nice and slow - remain inarguable." Entertainment Weekly (9/7/01, p.164) - "...An ambitious CD of mid-tempo hip-hop, rock, and gospel grooves..." - Rating: B Vibe (10/01, p.154) - 3.5 discs out of 5 - "...A confident step to the left of R&B's center - at once hip and risky....Being successful is one thing; now he's starting to get interesting." Brian Mcknight Superhero Songs Superhero Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) It may sound good but it has no spiritual power! Fred Hammond shoud never have tried to mix the light of Jehovah God with the darkness of satan! Why is most people listening to this and who is brian mcknight? Who is he compared to Jesus? Brian Mcknight, he is not the Gospel of Life! A message from Jehovah God, Those that listen to demonic sound of doctrine needs to stop and repent for their sins! A-men! Submitted by EVANGELIST. HE DID IT AGAIN!!! Not only is this the best album Brian McKnight has ever put out, I think it's the best album anyone has ever put out. I thought it could get no better than 'Back At One' and then he goes and does it again! I can't think of a better songwriter. His lyrics are heartfelt and meaningful, and I have to listen to this album every day! The song with Justin from NSYNC is one of the greatest songs ever written! He's always been someone I've looked up to in the songwriting department, and this album is exactly the reason why. Take it from me, if you're looking to make your money count, 'Superhero' will totally be worth it! Submitted by a reviewer (Akron, Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I'm Truly In Love I must admit...I've been totally captivated by this artist for the past five years. I think he makes the absolute best love songs in the world. His songs aren't bubblegum tunes nor are they raunchy. The lyrics that he writes have such substance and meaning. Superhero is my favorite release by Brian. His previous albums are wonderful and have given the R&B world a lot to be proud of, but as a whole, I like this release best. My favorite cuts on this album are "Still", "Love Of My Life", "When You Wanna Come", "Groovin' Tonight", "My Kind of Girl" & "When Will I See You Again". His vocals are dynamic here. I'm still baffled as to why he hasn't won a Grammy yet, but it doesn't really matter. He's still number one in my book. Submitted by a reviewer (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Superhero CD music
$8.49 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic ...

$13.24 Houseboat's LITTLE BRITE EP from July 2009 showcased a not-quite-coalesced vision, but their full-length, HOUSEBOAT, released only four months later, is a different story. Here, Bruce Blay and Joel North have enough time to fully develop their take on the post-rock genre, and enough studio savvy to incarnate ...
