There have been countless collections of Muddy Waters' classic Chess material released over the years, but Chess began to whittle down the domestic catalog toward the late '90s. The triple-disc Chess box remained in print, but they added two single-disc collections that each covered a specific period in Waters' career at Chess. Then, in 2001, MCA/Chess released The Anthology, a double-disc set that essentially contained much of those two single-disc collections, with several extra tracks, remastering and new liner notes. This still didn't correct the lack of a concise, single-disc overview with all the hits -- something that Muddy, Chuck Berry, and Howlin' Wolf all desperately need -- but if you're going to be buying two discs to get the full Muddy Waters story, you should get this instead of two separate discs, since it's simply easier. Besides this, even if it does contain a bunch of familiar material, it also contains some of the greatest music of the 20th century, and if you're not going to get the box but still want a comprehensive Muddy set, this is it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Far and away the foremost figure in Chicago's post-war electric blues scene, Muddy Waters is a towering musical icon who left behind a vast recorded legacy. ANTHOLOGY (1947-1972) nevertheless manages to be a definitive career summary, packing 50 tracks onto two discs, spanning 25 years of recordings for Chess, the premier Chicago blues label. From the earliest tracks, we can literally hear the style's template being created; while Waters had already abandoned his heavily Robert Johnson-influenced solo country-blues sound by the late '40s, a trace of that approach can still be heard in his first Chess sides. By the time the '50s rolled around, Muddy had fashioned a powerful engine that ran on high-voltage electricity, and, with the help of songsmith Willie Dixon, fashioned some of the most resonant and seminal blues recordings ever made. To hear Muddy's biting slide-guitar work and gravitas-filled voice is to understand just how deep into one's soul the blues can reach. Whether expressing the Tao-like sentiments of "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had," coming on like a house afire ("I'm Ready"), or bemoaning the heaviest of heartaches ("Standin' Around Cryin'"), no one reached further into the heart of the blues than Muddy did during his long, productive Chess tenure, as is made gloriously evident on ANTHOLOGY.

Anthology (1947-1972) Music Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) This blues legend set the trend if you dont know Muddy Waters, you dont know where it all began Submitted by t1o9n8y3 (Miami, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Blues and Rock History! Muddy Waters developed a sound that is the foundation of blues and rock & roll. How many great artists and rockgroups adapted his sounds and songs? A lot that is! These are 2 cd's with fifty (!) essential cuts of Muddy Waters. A music collection without this compilation is not complete, that's for certain. A Who's who of postwar blues. When you look at the list of musicians (e.g. Walter Jacobs,Buddy Guy,Fred Below and Otis Spann) contributing to the tracks on these cds it should be no surprise that its good. 'Honey Bee', Mannish Boy', 'Rollin Stone',I'm Ready and my personal favourite harp track 'Standin Around Cryin' are just a few of the delights on offer. With Muddy pulling the strings -and occaisionally plucking them - the result is possibly the most essential two cd collection in postwar blues.
