| | Doug Macdonald Blue Capers CD Doug Macdonald Discography of CDs
Doug MacDonald has been a fixture in the Los Angeles area since 1983. The boppish guitarist has an appealing tone, a relaxed improvising style, and the ability to swing at every tempo. On his seventh album as a leader, MacDonald performs straight-ahead jazz with pianist Art Hillery, bassist John Heard, and the late drummer Johnny Kirkwood. The music includes six standards (highlighted by "Bluesology," "So Danco Samba," and "I Thought About You") and originals by Blue Mitchell ("Blue Capers"), Hillery, MacDonald, Dodge Bolton, and Harry "Sweets" Edison ("A Little Tutu"). Each musician plays at the level that one would expect and, although the results are somewhat predictable, it is predictable excellence at a high level from a quartet of top-notch players. Easily recommended to bebop fans. ~ Scott Yanow

Blue Capers album
$13.29 Originally released on RCA (3652) & RCA (3741). Includes liner notes by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis.
This CD compilation contains the complete contents of two albums made (Lock the Fox and The Fox & the Hounds) by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis for RCA during the mid-'60s. The first half of the disc finds the tenor saxophonist in superb form as he interacts with Les Spann, Ross Tompkins, Ray Barretto, bassist Russell George, and drummer Chuck Lampkin. Each of the ten pieces is brief and to-the-point with the focus almost exclusively on the leader. The mix is kind of strange, as Tompkins is barely audible much of the time, though any listener will automatically be drawn to the leader's powerful sax. The packaging doesn't do justice to the second part of the disc, as there is no credit given to members of the big band supporting Davis, which includes ...
| | Catie Curtis Dreaming In Romance Languages CD (2004)
Blue Capers CD music
$14.79 It's hard to imagine anyone with even the slightest tolerance for rootsy singer/songwriter rock & roll not falling immediately under the spell of Catie Curtis, a Boston-based artist whose albums and live performances have been building her a substantial regional and national following over the past 15 years. Her fifth album is, thankfully, nothing substantially new: just a solid program of sturdy, sometimes anthemic, and occasionally darkly cathartic songs that chug along with the help of acoustic and electric guitars, the occasional Hammond organ or accordion, tasteful drums, and even a rhythm loop or two. Curtis is starting to rely a bit too much on one particular yodelly vocal trick, but other than that, ...
| | Magic Of Diahann Carroll CD (2005)
Blue Capers music CDs
$11.59 DRG's The Magic of Diahann Carroll is a two-fer CD reissue of the two Carroll LPs that United Artists Records released in 1960, the studio set Diahann Carroll and André Previn (UAS-6069) and the live album Diahann Carroll at the Persian Room (UAS-6080). Despite being only 24-years-old when these albums were made, Carroll was a show business veteran who had launched her nightclub career in her teens after winning first place on the TV talent show Chance of a Lifetime, then appeared on Broadway (House of Flowers) and on-screen (Carmen Jones) before turning 20. Her stint on United Artists (which had already included an LP of songs from Porgy and Bess, reflecting her appearance in the 1959 film version, also featuring Previn) followed one on RCA Victor (Sings Harold Arlen Songs [1957], Best Beat Forward [1958]) and preceded one on Atlantic (Fun Life [1961]) before she returned to Broadway for a Tony-winning turn in No Strings (1962), did more recording for Disque D'Or ('A' You're Adorable [1965]) and Columbia (Nobody Sees Me Cry [1967]), and, of course, became a sitcom star (Julia [1968-71]). The Previn ...
| | David "Fathead" Newman I Remember Brother Ray CD (2005)
Blue Capers songs
$13.85 The bluesy, distinctively hefty tenor sound of saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman has graced many recordings by many artists, but playing with Ray Charles during the 1950s and '60s is where he made a name for himself. Since then, Newman recorded numerous albums on his own, some leaning more towards jazz, others towards R&B. This versatility enables Newman to ...
| | Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind CD (2005)
Blue Capers album
$12.19 There are few artists who offer the raw sincerity and accomplished musical acumen that guitarist, singer, and songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps does. From his first offering, Lead Me On on the Burnside label, through his subsequent studio outings for Rykodisc, Phelps has done something remarkable: forged himself a solid identifying mark as a folk and blues musician of distinction in fields owing so much to the past that latter-day performers are usually crushed under the weight of them. Tap the Red Cane Whirlwind is a collection of solo live performances recorded n California in 2004. Lee Townsend, who has long been affiliated with him, produced the set. It opens with a nine-and-a-half-minute version of Skip James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues." Phelps snakily moves the tune through various modes and modulations, delving deep into Delta blues tonalities and backside melodies that open up spaces inside it. His voice, smoky and sweetly raspy, is never ...
