Still waiting for a worthy equilvalent
The "World at War" series was truly a classic that has failed to see another worthy adversary come along. You could tell this was going to give you the in depth account of the Second World War with the first fifteen minutes of the series with the grim recollection of a little town in France that was never rebuilt after the
war. It was left as a living momument like many others across Europe, Asia, and Africa. The British narrotors deep resonating voice stil rings clear in my head nearly twenty years later. An absolute must.

The premier WWII documentary
Without peer, the World at War remains the
pre-eminent record of the conflict which has had impact on many generations of Americans. Newly committed to DVD format, the clarity, sound and detail of the black and white and color film offers a mesmerizing doumentary
to what now seems unthinkable.
It is impeccably narrated by the late Lord Lawrence Olivier, who provides the guide and direction. In addition, there are bonus features such as still photos and a time line. If you must own one DVD set, make it this one.

Closed caption / subtitles for hearing impaired not availabe
Documentary deserves 5 stars. DVD version release desrves no more than 1 star as both the first and this second edition do NOT provide closed caption or subtitles for hearing impaired.
How are the people with hearing disabilities supposed to view this documentary?
Also the first edition had problems with Disc 1 and Disc 3 (some logical errors that were freezing the DVD player).

Simply the best!
As someone who has always studied WWII as a hobby, reading many books and watching many documentries, I first ran across the "World At War" series in the late eighties on cable tv, and was quite frankly stunned. I had never seen a documentry before that had covered the entire war from beggining to end, and I immediatly noticed the high quality of the production. From the interviews with those who were there, to the incredible footage, I was completly blown away! But for me, the excellent narriation by Laurence Olivier, plus the music by Carl Davis is what really brought the series to life. Even the very haunting opening (and closing) theme song was perfectly picked. I can be pretty critical at times, but I really cannot think of anything bad to say here. I mean, when a documentry does so many things so well, and at times is even able to drive one to emotion, you know it is done right. I began to collect the tapes whenever I could find them at video stores during the ninties, but could only get about half of them. Now I can get them all on dvd! In my opinion, if one could have only one WWII documentry, this is it! This is the one to have!
