Far from a crass populist, she's a subtle, nuanced performer who approaches her craft with an excess of skill and knowledge. This is apparent from the very beginning of THE LOOK OF LOVE, when Krall tackles the overly familiar Gershwin chestnut "S'Wonderful" not the way countless jazz singers have done in preceding decades, but in a style influenced by Joao Gilberto, who recorded the tune years before in a simmering bossa nova mode. Simply sensational
This CD by Diana Krall is simply sensational.Krall's interpretation of the material is beautiful. She takes her voice to a new level with more subtle phrasing and tonality. Her singing is so soothing to the soul. If this CD does not win some sort of Grammy Award I would be extremely surprised.

Once again -- a "winner"!
As in each of her recordings, Diana, with her wonderful piano skills and her sultry voice has given new life to the jazz standards.

Another Winner
I'm biased. Two years ago I sat within 6 feet of Ms. Krall at Ronnie Scott's nightclub in London, as she performed two amazing sets. If she recorded a reading of the telephone directory I'd buy it. That said, even allowing for my bias, the new album is terrific. Claus Ogerman, dug out of retirement to score the arrangements, pefectly complements the laid back slightly husky voice. Although some jazz diehards may claim it is a commercial sellout, I would disagree. To launch an entirely ballad album, so relaxed it almost has a problem leaving the hi-fi unit, in these days of rap predominance, is very courageous. Just one very minor carp, don't forget the piano playing next time, Diana.

Sleep with Diana Krall
With great anticipation I opened this CD and turned on my system. Twice! Ms. Krall's approach to the selections on this disk is best described as "laconic." Twice I've settled in with the intent to listen seriously to this disc, and have been asleep shortly. Her previous disc "When I look in Your Eyes" was such a terrific release, that this is even more disappointing. If she intended to sound sultry, it did not work. If she is trying to create a mood of "breathy" singing, she almost succeeds. I have three criteria to rate this disc: 1. MUSIC SELECTION -- very good mixture. 2. PEFORMANCE -- awful 3. SOUND QUALITY -- the recording quality (NOT the arrangements) of this disc is appropriate for this performance. It too is awful.
