INFINITY was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Musical Album For Children.
The smiling fish (a trout?) on the cover of Infinity captures the mood of Trout Fishing in America. The fish doesn't seem aware that five more fish are directly behind him, ready to make him part of the food chain. This is fun music for kids and adults. Who could resist singing along to "Junk Food Jump," a catchy tune that glorifies "Ice cream, potato chips, pie, and a coconut cake/Cotton candy, bubble gum, and a big strawberry shake"? Lou and Peter Berryman's "It's Better Than That" informs kids that being an adult is really -- so much more fun than they could imagine. "We have a chocolate éclair about as big as your head/Just before noon before we get out of bed." Trout Fishing in America is the accidental creation of Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood. They write most of their material together, sort of like Lennon and McCartney for children, and release their music on their own label, Trout Records. The great thing about Infinity is that with the exception of a little tree-hugging ("Everything That's Made of Wood"), the album is mostly free of "grown-up propaganda." That means it's just about being a kid and doing the things that kids do. Better yet, these guys make it all so much fun. For fans, Infinity is another winner; for those unfamiliar with Trout Fishing in America, this is a good album to start one's acquaintance. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

If they don't have that inherent magic, no amount of dressing upwill enable them to compete. One of the more cutting-edge performers out there for kids and families is the musical duo Trout Fishing In America. If you know their music, you know what I mean, and if you haven't heard them yet, it's time to do sometrolling. Their fifth children's recording swims into stores in September, and is cleverly titled inFINity (Trout Records, 2001). This new release is bound to be a hit with existing fans and will reel in some new fans, too. Trout Fishing In America is composed of Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood. Their press release claims they haven't forgotten what it's like to be kids. Sure enough, their exuberance comes on strong from the very first song, 'MyBest Day,' an upbeat and positive fantasy about a child's 'best day.' This song is exceptionally well-written. The words are meaningful without being trite or syrupy, and the music--a hybrid of Caribbean and South African styles--is uplifting, wonderfully capturing the mood of the lyrics. When I looked at the songwriting credit, I discovered that 'My Best Day' was derived from a songwriting workshop with kids in Olathe, Kansas. Cool! Trout Fishing in America ........ the name taken from a Richard Brautigan novel, seems almost as incongruent and intriguing as a picture of this musical duo - Ezra Idlet (guitar) stands six feet nine inches and Keith Grimwood (bass), five feet five and one half inches. What is more intriguing is the musical career these two ...

This album really does deliver on its title, because it's tuneful and sunny enough for children to enjoy, yet also clever enough for their parents to appreciate. The conceits behind the songs are playful and true to toddler life: the instantly recognizable subject of "Mine!," the bad-hair-day saga of "My Hair Had a Party Last Night," and the morning household chaos of "Baby's Got the Car Keys." More importantly, these are largely performed in a live setting, which allows the duo to engage in stage banter and one-upmanship, as when "18 Wheels on a Big Rig" turns into a counting contest -- in Roman numerals (!). Trout Fishing also includes a few of their "grown-up" tunes on ...
