| | Disco Dance CD (4 Customer Reviews)
By the late '90s Sony had begun to introduce budget sets that raided their vaults and often arbitrarily grouped songs together for mass consumption. Hits of the 80s, Vol. 1 and Forever Soul were two of the worst offenders. By 2001, the label decided to make better use of the CD time constraints by extending the running time of each disc. Make no mistake, Disco Dance is far from comprehensive set; often the tracks aren't even disco. This overview mines the up-tempo 1974-1999 tracks that first appeared on CBS, then Sony labels, and whatever songs the label acquired over the years. Some of the better tracks, like Gary's Gang's "Keep on Dancing," Jackie Moore's "This Time Baby," Denience Williams' "I Got the Next Dance," and the potent yet nearly gauche the Isley Brothers "It's a Disco Night" certainly don't usually make like-minded compilations. While far from the Studio 54 days, Der Kommissar's "After the Fire" and the Romantics "Talking in Your Sleep" will rock any dance floor. The superior DJ Mix of C&C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat" is the only '90s offering here that doesn't seem faceless or synthetic. Although the no-frills presentation of this leaves a lot to be desired, Disco Dance does include some interesting mixes. A tight and rare edit of "Dazz" from Brick and the extended mix of Heatwave's "The Groove Line" are a few of the interesting items. Disco Dance isn't definitive but it has enough tracks to please those with wide ranging tastes. ~ Jason Elias

| | Pure 60'S: The #1 Hits CD (2002)
Disco Dance
$11.99 This compilation is just what it says: number one hits on the American charts from the 1960s. It has a leg up on some similar anthologies, though, by virtue of its sheer quantity: 26 songs spanning the entire decade, which is pretty good value for a single CD. While it's true the selection is a little arbitrary, on the whole it's ...

Disco Dance
$9.09 Someone at Sony must have a serious love of dance music, because it's hard to believe this sprawling, hard to figure out compilation was conceived by the marketing department. There are some big names on Everybody Dance Now! Remixed, Remodeled & Remade but a heck of a lot of little ones, and some that'll only ring bells for club historians with a taste for the mainstream. The big names aren't always represented by the big hits, either, but who'd expect to have so many hard-to-finds in one place? If you've been searching for the "Soul Solution Vocal Dub" of Cyndi Lauper's "Ballad of Cleo & Joe" or the "Stephen Nikolas Club Mix" of the Indigo ...
| | Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion CDs (2004) Digipak
Disco Dance
$41.09 The three-disc box set Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion was released just after PBS premiered the program of the same name, which featured new performances -- from Anita Ward, Thelma Houston, A Taste of Honey, KC & the Sunshine Band, and several others -- with archival footage from the disco era. Content-wise, the box doesn't do much to separate itself from the average disco compilation series, leaning heavily on mainstream ...

| | Naughty By Nature CD (1991)
Disco Dance
$10.15 There was not a bigger, more contagious crossover radio smash in the autumn of 1991 than Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," a song that somehow managed the trick of being both audaciously catchy and subversively coy at the same time. Its irrepressible appeal -- the Jackson 5 sample, the saucy subject matter, the huge anthemic chorus, Treach's phat rat-a-tat flow -- was so widespread, in fact, that it played just as well to the hardcore heads in the hood as it did to the hip-hop dabblers in the suburbs. The beauty of the trio's self-titled full-length debut is that it is every bit as musically accomplished, and every bit as ghetto fabulous, in its entirety as that watershed first single. Naughty by Nature is both a pop and a rap classic that chews up stylistic real estate by the block, easily shifting from an old-school rhyme-off between ...
| | Black Nasty Talking To The People CD (1973)
Disco Dance
$8.65 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarrantino (1999, Fanatasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Like Rare Earth and early Funkadelic, Black Nasty took a very rock-minded approach to Detroit soul and funk -- probably too rock-minded for many program directors at black radio. And at the same time, Black Nasty was too funky and soul-oriented for FM rock radio. So Black Nasty fell through the cracks in the early to mid-'70s, although it enjoyed some commercial success after evolving into the ADC Band and recording the major funk hit of 1978, "Long Stroke." The band's only album as Black Nasty, Talking to the People, was a commercial disappointment but a creative triumph. Those who savored the Motor City funk/rock experiments of Rare Earth and early Funkadelic will find a lot to admire about gritty, hard-edged smokers like ...
