'80s Pop Hits is a three-disc set from Sony with a heavy emphasis on ballads, many of which continue to be played on adult contemporary radio stations across the U.S. The relatively upbeat material -- like Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," Toto's "Rosanna," Luther Vandross' "Stop for Love," and Deniece Williams' "Let's Hear It for the Boy" -- tends to be safe enough for waiting-room listening. But it is definitely the slow, soft material (joined by a few power ballads) that takes center-stage: Surface's "Shower Me with Your Love," Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "All Cried Out," and Gregory Abbott's "Shake You Down" are some of the inclusions. ~ Andy Kellman

80'S Pop Hits
$41.09 Liner Note Author: Steven Chean. Designed as a companion piece to a PBS documentary of the '60s, Shout! Factory's triple-disc box set The '60s Rock Experience is a basic collection of 59 tracks from the most storied decade of the 20th century (what a shame they weren't able to make it 60 tracks, though!). Actually, the compilers bend the rules a little bit and add several songs from the '70s -- the Grass Roots' 1971 "Sooner or Later," Pacific Gas & Electric's 1970 "Are You Ready?," Five Man Electrical Band's 1971 "Signs," ...

Featuring a variety of guest performers throughout, including Green on Red's Chris Cacavas, Juliana Hatfield, Steve Wynn, and a fair hunk of Poi Dog Pondering, Swerve features the then duo of Gelb and Convertino on a fine slew of songs. Recorded at a number of different locations, from Boston to Los Angeles, Swerve found Gelb reaching the ten-year point with his band in fantastic style. Starting with the brilliant stop-start electric guitar intro on "Can't Find Love" -- don't listen carefully and it sounds like the CD player's on the blink -- Gelb and Convertino and company hit the ground running. Gelb's fractured vision of roots music meets modern times sounded distinct and enjoyable enough at the time of Swerve's release, and still holds up excellently in later years. His ear for aggressively weird soloing in particular is just great (check "Dream Stay" for one of ...
