| | Jon Durant Brief Light CD Jon Durant Discography of CDs
Listen to Jon Durant's latest album, Brief Light, and you might think its collection of richly textured soundscapes was created by means of artful layering of keyboards, Then you realize that the dominant instrument here is actually guitar. This is guitar as paintbrush; by employing a unique arsenal of instruments, including electric guitar, cloud guitar and filter guitar, over loops and repetitive rhythms, Durant has crafted a series of impressionistic aural paintings. Several highly regarded collaborators, including bass and stick master Tony Levin, percussionist Vinny Sabatino, pianist Michael Whalen, and renowned guitar-synthesizer player Randy Roos are on board to provide further coloration to the sonic palette. On "River," gongs ring out over layers of tribal percussion with Durant's wailing guitar soaring over it all, while on the majestic "Rosemary" Whalen's piano complements Durant's synthetic mallet work. The album's centerpiece, the nearly 10-minute-long "Behind Stone Walls," features a hypnotic, mesmerizing filtered guitar rhythm with Levin's stick prowling beneath the surface and Durant's guitar building in intensity on top. On the closer, "Friday (later)," Durant and Roos create a series of gracefully shifting, atmospheric passages that gradually fade away into nothingness.Brief Light is an exquisite, continually fascinating album by an artist who is expert at shaping sound in evocative and multi-dimensional ways. It is well worth experiencing.-Jazz Times Magazine

| | Armand Ntep Bantuphonic CD (2004)
Brief Light music CDs
$13.69 Armand Ntep is both a unique vocalist and a prolific, innovative composer. His vocal talent is broad in terms of octave and style from silky baritone croon to pygmy-inspired syncopation to tender tenor ballads. His compositions run the gamut from salsa to hip-hop to traditional "lihongo" from his native Cameroon. From the time his uncle gave him a guitar at age 4, Armand has been composing music. He began performing at age 8, playing with his father's orchestra in Eseka, Cameroon. While learning in school, Armand was studying different musical styles -- reggae, rumba, cha-cha-cha, as well as popular Cameroonian "assiko", "makossa" and "bikutsi" beats. When he was a teenager, Armand developed partial paralysis in his right forehand, ending his chance as a guitarist. It was not until five years later that Armand discovered his singing talent when he joined the high school choir at the suggestion of a teacher. After high school, Armand performed at the well-known African club "Farafina" in Paris, France and at "Le Vieux Négre" in Douala, Cameroon. He also formed the group "Longue Djam" with whom he played ...
| | Mu Time, Milk And Magic CD (2005)
Brief Light songs
$15.19 MU is an open-source project which includes musicians from various origins: born as a piano / percussion duo first with the addition of the sax then of the guitar soon it changed into a quartet, but, loyal to its inclination, in its live performances it puts up from time to time other musicians; this time the violinist Marco Galliazzo. Even if the approach is jazzy, it's not easy to tell what kind of music MU plays, because the interests and awesomeness every musician brings up are really disparate. A thing is sure, the starting point: the concert of MU are improvisation, there's nothing prepared before. Improvisation rises spontaneous, without any mediation, simply as a flow which derives from the musicians themselves. This kind to proceed very charming - that requires a good harmony and mutual listening - certainly represents a point of strength for the ensemble, but at the same time can fix a limit; in fact improvisation - as musicians know well - even though is free expression of the single, or of the collective, it's not exempt from rules otherwise there's the risk to "lose ourselves". More than in Bruzzolo's parallel project (Chaos - read the review of their first CD) where improvisation is somehow or other supported by electronics, with MU, where electronics is practically absent, the individual skills are very important and undoubtedly they are present. Giacomo Li Volsi is a pianist who draws his inspiration from Keith Jarrett, not specifically of the performance level, but mostly in the construction of the solos: it's evident the use of scales and clusters searching reiterated pedals, well supported by the rhythmic, over which usually the sax improvisations start. Andrea O. Martin is surprising: clearly influenced by Coltrane he's able to drive his soprano sax in very linear way but at the same time to get a considerable intensity. It's really interesting as he's able to create, from a phrase of the guitar or of the piano, or simply from a rhythmical scansion, long and imaginative solos. Also interesting his moderate use of electronics to give particular effects to his sound. Andrea Bolinelli is the rock soul of the ensemble and he turns out a little bit extraneous from the improvvisative process even if he provides a good rhythmical and colour support; fine his rock/blues ...
