;Blues Rock. Guests: G.Allman,R.Derringer,L.West
Personnel includes: Joe Bonamassa (vocals, guitar); Rick Derringer, Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Gregg Allman (vocals, organ); Jeannie Burns, Annie Burns (vocals); Len Bonamassa (guitar); Dave Borde (keyboards); Creamo Liss (bass); Tony Cintron (drums). Recorded at Pyramid Recording Studios, Ithaca, New York. Originally released in 2000, A NEW DAY YESTERDAY marks the solo studio debut of blues singer/guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Only in his early 20s at the time of the album's recording, Bonamassa performs in a rough-and-tumble style that belies his relatively young age, as heard on both originals (the soulful "Current Situation") and a fine selection of covers (a fiery version of the Jethro Tull title track). Named after the early Jethro Tull classic, which he expertly covers here in a jaw-dropping performance, A New Day Yesterday is a fine debut by guitar ace Joe Bonamassa. And though his record company tried to ride the coattails of teenage guitar prodigies like Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang and position him (misguidedly and much too late) as a straight-up prodigal blues kid, Bonamassa is really much more than a traditional bluesman. Rather, as best exemplified by the Jethro Tull number cited above, his bluesy take on Free's "Walk in My Shadows," or his hard boogie romp through Al Kooper's "Nuthin' I Wouldn't Do (For a Woman Like You)," this excellent debut places the guitarist's influences as much in classic '70s hard rock as in the blues. Along with his deceptively age-wearied vocals (he was only 22 at the time of this recording), this unusual combination translates into the aggressive, soulful crunch heard on Bonamassa's many original compositions. Among these, the jolting double whammy of "Miss You, Hate You" and "Colour and the Shape" (note the Anglicized spelling) are the most obvious standouts, but the guitarist also makes the Warren Haynes-penned "If Heartaches Were Nickels" his own with a tense, riveting performance. All in all, a promising debut. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

This man is hot! Joe Bonamassa is one of the best guitar players I've ever heard, and I've listened to a lot of blues. The more I play the CD, the more I like it. His playing is diverse and voice sultry. If I had to drive all day, I wouldn't miss an opportunity to see him live. Submitted by Debra R. (Gainesville, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Josh Rouse Nashville CD (2005) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Hong Kong
New Day Yesterday
$33.59 Features two bonus cuts. Josh Rouse's album from 2003 1972 was hailed by many as a triumph. He cast aside the gloom that pervaded his early records, opened up his sound to include such disparate sources as Memphis soul, '70s soft rock, '60s baroque pop and straight-ahead danceable pop. Easily the equal of any of his contemporary's work, one had the fear that it might have represented a one-time-only peak performance. Not to worry. Nashville reunites Rouse with producer Brad Jones and the two have concocted a sound even bouncier and dreamier than the already impossibly dreamy and bouncy 1972. There are hints of all the styles Rouse references on 1972 but here they are integrated into his sound more smoothly. Jones adds all kinds of varied keyboards, strings, guitar sounds, bits of sonic trickery and atmosphere to that sound which leads to each song sounding similar but also quite different. The production and sound are half the game and Rouse doesn't let his half down, as his songs are incredibly strong on Nashville. "Streetlights," the Smiths-influenced "Winter in the Hamptons," "Carolina," and the heart-broken piano ballad "Sad Eyes"; they are as hooky as anything on 1972 but have more weight and emotional power. By the time each song is through it is stamped into your memory, turning the record into an instantly familiar kind of classic. His lyrics are as sharp and surprising as ever. He is incredibly adept at dropping in lines ...
