The talented singer/actor here presents the sixth in a collection of releases that have earned him the title the reigning King Of Salsa. Unlike his self-titled crossover 1999 release, this one is in Spanish, but no translation is necessary for the mighty swing generated by Marc Anthony's passionate delivery.

| | Tito Puente Top Percussion CD (1957)
Vallenatos En Bachata 2001 album
$7.69 TOP PERCUSSION presents Afro-Cuban music in its purest form, with 11 of the 12 tracks recorded by a group of the finest Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians working in New York in the 1950s. Each side of the original album was recorded on a separate occasion, and they each offer a distinct flavor of the Afro-Cuban experience.
The first side showcases a powerhouse percussion ensemble led by Puente and featuring Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo. Puente's supple timbale work drives a series of complex 6/8 rhythms thoroughly rooted in the African call-and-response tradition.
The second side of the original album spotlights Puente's combustive timbale work. The master drummer demonstrates the classic fire and dynamic control which have made him such an enduring role model for generations of timbaleros. The concluding track, "Night Ritual," is a fascinating mini-suite that synthesizes elements of modern jazz with propulsive Afro-Cuban dance rhythms, a vital style of music which Puente's band helped develop and popularize.

| | Valley Of The Giants Westworld CD (2004) (Import) Canada
Vallenatos En Bachata 2001 album
$14.15 The indie rock supergroup Valley of the Giants aren't big pretenders with an ambitious scope of creating an artistically original album of rock & roll. If anything, they're slightly reserved about their various backgrounds and talents; however, an impressionable blend of many musical worlds and reflections of particular moods and spells of an isolated countryside carry the weight that is the Valley of the Giants' self-titled debut. It's a cinematic soundscape captured on a four-track recorder, an instrumental trail to unguarded moments of the most northern regions of America while also a trek to the more bleak ridges of the bottom of the earth. From the creaking flow of lap steel guitars and violins of "Claudia & Klaus" and "Westworld," Valley of the Giants' post-rock experiment is well underway. A careful and cautious approach to production is one step ahead as the band explores its sound. One can sense how comfortable each musician is, for Valley of the Giants breathes without grand pretext. The only thing the band is concerned with is musical and/or emotional discovery and allowing the listener the chance to embark on such a journey. Cartoonish horns just barely hint at the depth of "Cantara Sin Guitara," the sibling to "Westworld." Folk and world beats dance in the darkness of an afternoon while Spanish-flavored brass arrangements aim to break such grayness above one's head. The strain for sunlight continues on "Waiting for a Bullet," an Arabic-inflected illustration of heat and hunger, a red sphere of flames quenching one's thirst for passionate inquisitions. Such craving continues on "A Whaling Tale." This moving account of a penguin kidnapped by killer whales doesn't compose the glow and spark of the album-closing track, "Bala Bay Inn," but that's the purpose of this passage. Valley of the Giants allows you to start somewhere and end ...
| | David Campbell Swing Sessions CD (2006) Import
Vallenatos En Bachata 2001 CD music
$19.79 Perhaps Australia's answer to Michael Bublé, David Campbell made a name for himself quickly with SWING SESSIONS, an ode to the showmen of yesteryear. Campbell does his best to mimic his heroes here, from the opening Dean Martin piece to Frank Sinatra's "Call Me Irresponsible," to a couple of Bobby Darin numbers worked in for good measure. Where Bublé will (usually) make a song somewhat his own with a different phrasing or delivery, though, Campbell seems to be trying for an exact replica instead. There's soul and pathos in his delivery, but it's not David Campbell's soul and pathos so much as Dean Martin's pathos and Sinatra's soul. In "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" however, midway into the album, Campbell starts to break through a bit, adding a slightly younger vibe and a slightly freer format. "Beyond the Sea" gets a similar treatment, with just a little looseness that wasn't in the Darin original. Despite any overt mimicry, the album comes off well. A punchy big band ...
