40 Below Summer: Max Illidge (vocals); Jordan Plingos, Joe D'Amico (guitar); Hector "Hook" Graziani (bass); Carlos Aquilar (drums). Recorded between March & May 2001. Personnel: Carlos Aguilar (drums). Audio Mixer: Toby Wright. Recording information: Cello Studios (03/2001-05/2001); Sound City Studios (03/2001-05/2001). Photographer: Dean Karr. 40 Below Summer looked to impress with their 2001 major-label debut, Invitation to the Dance, and largely succeed by offering up an eclectic batch of songs that are dripping with creativity. Invitation to the Dance at first glance may seem to be just another hard rock album, but along with further observation it is apparent that 40 Below Summer is striving to spice up what modern hard rock became in the 21st century. By combining hardcore breakdowns with melodic singing, a dash of aggressive hip-hop, and the worldly aspects of jazz, 40 Below Summer created a recipe that will satisfy the listener as well as sate one's soul. Max Illedge's unique vocal mannerisms help push 40 Below Summer forward, and his natural vocal ability make songs such as "Step into the Sideshow" and "Falling Down" stand out as must-hear tunes. Throughout the album there is a reoccuring sense of déjà vu, as was common with most releases in 2001, but 40 Below Summer overcome their minor similarities to truly be seen as an original band amidst the cluster of fledgling acts struggling to break through. 40 Below Summer's ability to keep the listener guessing and the album's repetitive appeal make Invitation to the Dance a surefire hit for those looking for something more out of hard rock than a down-tuned bass and simplistic lyrics. ~ Jason D. Taylor

Invitation To The Dance
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm ...

Invitation To The Dance
$6.79 Producers include: Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Jermaine Dupri, Ron "Amen-Ra" Lawrence, Timbaland. Engineers include: Brad Gilderman, Drew Coleman, Michael Patterson. "A Song For Mama" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. Soul Food: The Best R&B of 2000 presents some of the year's top urban soul artists and hit singles. Some songs, of course, were bigger hits than others; some are by artists trying to gain a foothold in the crowded urban marketplace, while others are by well-established superstars. Fans of contemporary, hip-hop-influenced R&B will find this an entertaining sampler, with highlights including Toni Braxton's "Wasn't Man Enough," TLC's "No Scrubs," Aaliyah's "I Don't Wanna," R. Kelly's "When a Woman's Fed Up," and a remixed version of Sisqo's "Thong Song" featuring Foxy Brown. ~ Steve Huey As the first release from Babyface's movie studio, Soul Food was an auspicious beginning -- a rich, multi-faceted film that captured the complexities and emotions of a contemporary urban black family that never lapses into stereotypes. It was a minor gem, as is Babyface's soundtrack. Like his work on Waiting to Exhale, the soundtrack for Soul Food is a sampler of mainstream urban styles, featuring some ballads, some swingbeat, and some hip-hop. It's all tied together by his gift for melodic, well-crafted songs and production. Babyface is one of the few producers and songwriters who can function entirely on commercial terms and never seem crass. Nearly every track on Soul Food works, whether it's the hip-hop mix of Blackstreet's "Call Me," Total's rap "What About Us," the urban soul of Dru Hill's "We're Not Making Love More" or Boyz II Men's epic ballad "A Song for Mama." The album tracks from Xscape, En Vogue, Tony Toni Tone, Milestone, and Lil' Kim & ...
