| | Lee 'Scratch' Perry Lee "Scratch" Perry On The Wire CD Lee 'Scratch' Perry Discography of CDs
Lee "Scratch" Perry's personal brand of musical insanity has given many reggae artists (notably Bob Marley, Junior Murvin and Max Romeo) just the edge that they needed to set themselves apart from the pack; at his best, Perry seems to draw from powers that, if not divine, are at least extraterrestrial (and actually, he himself has made such claims explicitly). But Perry is more often at his best as a producer than as a performer -- he has no singing voice to speak of, and while his lyrics are sometimes amusing, they are just as frequently tiresome and childish. On the Wire was recorded around 1988 at the behest of Trojan Records, but as is frequently the case with Perry, weirdness and complication set in, and it took ten years for the tapes finally to be delivered. The result will be deemed worth the wait by Perry fans, but those unfamiliar with his work may find it more bewildering than compelling. The instrumental backing is credited to a handful of guitarists and one bass player, but someone also provided programmed rhythms and keyboards; the sound is mostly straightforward modern roots reggae, larded with the weird sound effects and production quirks that Perry fans have come to love. There are versions of Bob Marley's "Exodus" and "Keep On Moving," but the other songs are stream-of-consciousness affairs featuring lines like "The devil dead/I kill him with my lightning head" and "I am the elephant man and Michael Jackson could not buy me." Recommended to those who know what they're getting into. Other should proceed with caution. ~ Rick Anderson

$9.19 A second swing at the all-cover version formula, Labour of Love II doesn't even come close to the lively original. It's encouraging to see a more interesting set of selections and it would lead one to think that the album isn't a contrived cash-in. Too bad the band falls prey to ...

$18.59 Joining the many ska, rocksteady, and early reggae collections put out by both Heartbeat and Trojan records, Top Rock Steady from the French label Esoldun features an appealing and competitive mix of vocal and instrumental cuts. All the tracks were originally recorded at producer Duke Reid's era-defining Treasure Isle studio between 1966 and 1968, and feature the urbane musical backing of Reid's house band of the time, Tommy McCook & the Supersonics. With McCook on tenor saxophone and flute, fellow ex-Skatalite Ernest Ranglin on guitar, and Winston Wright on organ, among others, the Supersonics contribute hip and breezy instrumentals like "Travelling on Bond Street" and the incredible "Rock ...

| | Sepultura Roorback CD (2003) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Lee "Scratch" Perry On The Wire songs
$35.09 Brazilian metal giants Sepultura are one of the biggest names in the genre, and for this Japanese issue of their ROORBACK album they've included an additional song.
Losing a lead singer can be incredibly disruptive for a band. Some bands will bounce back -- AC/DC, for example, sounded better than ever when it hired Brian Johnson after Bon Scott's untimely death -- while others will suffer a creative decline. Sepultura experienced a major loss when former lead singer Max Cavalera left to form Soulfly in 1996, but thankfully, Derrick Green proved to be a highly capable replacement. If 1998's mildly uneven Against -- Sepultura's first album with Green -- found the band struggling with the transition, Green was filling Cavalera's shoes much more confidently on 2001's Nation. And if there are still any lingering doubts about the Green/Sepultura match, 2003's excellent Roorback should put them to rest for good. Green is passionate and focused throughout the album -- he has no problem going that extra mile -- and the writing is consistently strong. Unrest and political corruption are recurring themes on Roorback; American singer Green and his Brazilian colleagues spare no anger on incendiary tracks like "Mind War," "Apes of God," and the crushing opener, "Come Back Alive" (which is about surviving the horrors of wartime combat). The songs that Sepultura wrote for Roorback paint a consistently bleak and troubling picture of the world -- one that is only reinforced by an unlikely remake of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" appended to the album. Sepultura successfully give U2's gem a ferocious alternative metal makeover, and Bono's dark lyrics are right at home on this politically charged CD. When Roorback came out during the summer of 2003, Sepultura had been together for 19 years -- and this compelling ...
