On vacation in the Caribbean, Creation Records boss Alan McGee heard and signed Bermuda-born reggae artist Mishka, and this self-titled debut contains the fruits of that chance meeting. While Caucasian reggae artists are often met with the same critical and commercial apprehension as Caucasian rappers, Mishka actually transcends his influence on this collection of ten songs and delivers a fine debut that adds to the genre instead of pirating it. The subject matter is fairly simple -- consisting mainly of love and relationships -- but the singer's voice, reminiscent of a young Sting, contains an emotional believability that elevates the simple lyrics. The reverb-drenched guitars and strained vocals of "Give You All the Love," for example, create an immediate hook that draws the listener into the album's more subtle tunes such as "Lonely" and "When the Rain Comes Down." Though at first pass the album doesn't instantly grab a listener the way McGee's hasty signing would suggest, after the deceptively simple melodies begin to take hold, it becomes increasingly clear that it wasn't just the Caribbean sun or stiff drinks that made Creation's boss so giddy to record the young singer. ~ Steve Kurutz

Mishka music CDs
$6.09 Popular songs are often associated with the vocalists that made them famous but few artists actually have the distinction of having a "theme" song along the lines of Bob Hope with "Thanks for the Memories." Even fewer can claim to have two theme songs attached to them and Andy Williams is one of those fortunate stars. After "Moon River" became forever linked to Williams, he recorded a holiday song for his first Christmas album that gave him a yuletide hit and theme song. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" was the right song at the right time for Williams when he began to perform it on his highly successful NBC Christmas specials that featured the whole Williams clan. Both the song and the television specials were so memorable, it wasn't long before Williams was crowned "Mr. Christmas." Of course having a full album of wonderful holiday songs perfectly performed doesn't hurt either and the Andy Williams Christmas Album was an instant hit when released in 1963 and has since become a traditional classic. Along with "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," Williams cheerfully celebrates with the spirited medley ...

Mishka CD music
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, ...

$13.65 Although singer and saxophonist Tex Beneke is not a household name, he was once one of the most popular singers and players in the world, as Glenn Miller's vocalist and sideman. His warm tones graced the big hit "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," among others. This 25-track assemblage of his swing-era hits honors him in his role as a bandleader, with live and studio recordings from several dates between 1951 and 1956. Classics like the title tune, "Singin' in the Rain," and "Georgia on my Mind" get the full orchestral treatment, and listeners unfamiliar with the era's canon will delight in discovering gems like "Riverboat Shuffle" and "Palladium Patrol."
A great selection of nostalgic 1950s hits from the ex-Glenn Miller saxophonist/vocalist. In 1948 Tex Left the Miller Legacy band but still had several members of the original band in his new line-up. Listening to these recordings it's possible to imagine
Adapter: Henry Mancini.
Tex Beneke: Tex Beneke (tenor saxophone); Buddy Yeager (vocals, trumpet); Billy Raymond (vocals); Bobby Gibbons, Earl Backus, Sam Drugan, Danny Gregus, Al Hendrickson, Barry Galbraith, Sam Herman (guitar); Billy Ainsworth, Tino Barzie, Wilbur Schwartz (clarinet, alto saxophone); Teddy Lee (alto saxophone, baritone ...
