||Contains one of the finest pop songs ever written.|
After being "discovered" by Columbia records in the late 60's, and recording two commercial flops (critically acclaimed, of course), Tony Kosinec took a hiatus for a few years, and returned with a vengeance. In 1973, he recorded the superb "Consider the Heart" (with the brilliant "Heart of a Small Business"), and 12 years later an even better "The Passerby" on True North. This CD is the Japanese re-issue of this complex and often hypnotic lp. All the songs are interesting, but there are two standouts! MEN AND WOMEN is one that anybody who has every gone through a power struggle in a heterosexual relationship can identify with. "We think he isn't very sensitive... We think she isn't very kind. I think they both want a relationship With somebody in their mind". But the most exciting, heartfelt, and stirring moment belongs to "Listen to the Hukilau"--a song that received a bit of airplay on some Canadian radio stations at the time. A nine year old girl is taken to the tourist resort of Santa Ana with relatives, to stay with her Grandma Blixt "while her Mom and Daddy work it out". Distracting from any negative feelings is the glory and childlike innocence of the fake "Hawaiian swing and sway". She's told "Don't worry Ann, listen to the Hukilau Nothing could be spooky now, Man that steel guitar can really play"..... The description of this physical and emotional retreat is vivid. And little Ann's fear of abandonment is touched upon with artful subtlety. "Every night on Harbor Boulevard Ann would go to bed and pray real hard Grandma Blixt would live right through the night Gee she's old but maybe she might" An extremely talented writer and a terrific interpreter of his own songs, he also does a great job of "Something's Coming" from West Side Story. Today Tony Kosinec focuses on writing music for film and TV. -Larry Saidman.
