Allen (tenor saxophone); Robin Eubanks (trombone); Orrin Evans (piano); Ralph Peterson (drums). Audio Mixer: Lou Holtzman. Liner Note Author: Duane Eubanks. Recording information: East Side Studio, New York, NY (11/30/1999/12/01/1999). Photographers: John Healy; Aleardo G. Buzzi. Trumpeter Duane Eubanks' set evolves as it goes along. It begins like a Blue Note revival date, with fine hard bop versions of Hank Mobley's "Two and One" and Bobby Hutcherson's memorable "Little B's Poem." After a driving Ralph Peterson original, Eubanks sounds lyrical on "In Your Own Sweet Way" and his ballad "Too Late." Robin Eubanks' "Red, Black and Green Blues" goes back to Art Blakey territory and brings back Lee Morgan's obscure "Stop/Start." The most original songs are the final two, a hip-hop-inspired piece called "Ebony Slick," which includes guest altoist Antonio Hart (and is full of fire), and the lengthy and often rather free "Slew Footed." Eubanks is joined by his older brother, Robin, on trombone (who, in this setting, shows off the influences of Curtis Fuller and J.J. Johnson), the cool-toned and Tranish tenor of J.D. Allen, and a tight and stimulating rhythm section. The musicianship is excellent, and even if none of the players (except perhaps Peterson) has overly original voices, they certainly fare well on this modern straightahead jazz set. ~ Scott Yanow Duane Eubanks Second Take Songs Second Take Review

Second Take
$15.05 Personnel: Horace Silver (piano); Junior Cook (tenor saxophone); Louis Smith (trumpet); Gene Taylor (acoustic bass); Louis Hayes (drums). Composer and pianist Horace Silver was one of the leading lights of the post-bop movement, and LIVE AT NEWPORT '58 captures him in his prime. Leading a crack quintet (which includes trumpeter Louis Smith and saxophonist Junior Cook) through four slinking, swinging tunes, Silver turns in a wonderful set. The set opens ...

Before they went electric and funky, John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood were acoustic and funky -- and a lot of other things -- on this exciting early CD. They ruminate like a conventional jazz piano trio when the whim hits them, or move outside when Medeski explodes into Don Pullen-esque clusters. Their métier, though, was clearly the neo-funk thing, for when Martin pulls off those crackling hip-hop and M-Base-related beats on tracks like "Uncle Chubbs" and "Orbits," the band really achieves liftoff. "Caravan" gets a rolling New Orleans funk treatment, and the finale, "Querencia," is a lengthy excursion into dense avant-garde underbrush with a touch of the street in the beat. On several tracks, a three-brass, two-reeds horn section add an extra level of excitement, and the trio tracks are recorded live to DAT (hence the exceptionally crisp sound). ~ Richard S.
