Trumpeter Jim Rotondi brings together vibraphonist Joe Locke and pianist Mulgrew Miller for this vibrant Sharp Nine date. Trombonist Steve Davis guests on two tracks and contributes the stately bossa "Evening Shades of Blue." The rhythm is handled by bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth. Rotondi's horn work, at once elegantly melodic and technically dazzling, provides a sonic centerpiece for the album, although it is the juxtaposition of Locke's vibes and Miller's authoritative piano that gives the music its most unique signature. Locke's own "Last Ditch Wisdom," a fast line that takes its time settling into up-tempo swing, is one of the more surprising tracks. Rotondi weighs in with three originals: the opening "Designated Hitter," a bright modified blues; "Miller Time," a loping hard bop vehicle written in honor of the session's pianist; and the waltz "Reverence," a similar version of which served as the title track of a Criss Cross CD by Rotondi from around the same time. The non-original picks are inspired ones: Benny Golson's ballad "Park Avenue Petite," Herbie Hancock's seldom-played "Yams," and a snappy, muted-trumpet reading of Irving Berlin's "Remember," with Steve Davis reappearing on the bridge and taking a solo turn. ~ David R. Adler
Jim Rotondi has quietly made his way to the very top tier of jazz trumpeters, and this CD proves it. Known primarily for his lengthy association with tenorman Eric Alexander & organ dynamo Charles Earland, this album is a tour de force. Jim is joined by

Destination Up album
$13.79 There's a lot to like about this session led by Jim Rotondi. This superb trumpeter, flügelhornist, and arranger is joined by a first-rate rhythm section (pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Joe Farnsworth), as well as the talented yet under-appreciated alto saxophonist Jesse Davis on five of the eight tracks.
The program itself is well balanced, with great blowing, imaginative charts
and a pair of strong originals. Rotondi's cooking "On ...

Destination Up CD music
$12.29 Steve Winwood teams up with producer Narada Michael Walden, and the result is a fine, multi-textured disc. Winwood's calling card has always been his gritty, soulful voice, and he uses it to good effect on tunes like "Spy in the House of Love." The tune opens things up with a bang--it's an up-tempo, funky jam about falling under the influence of that powerful emotion.
The album continues with gospel-tinged ballads ("Angel of Mercy"), well-turned covers (Sly and the Family Stone's "Family Affair), and even a Cuban-inflected piece ("Got to Get Back to My Baby"). On the latter, Winwood employs some top-flight Cuban musicians, including percussionist Walfredo Reyes, and pianist, co-arranger Rebecca Mauleon-Santana. The tune is a real highlight, and defines some welcome new ground for Winwood -- he's come a long way from The Spencer Davis Group and "Gimme Some Lovin' ". All in all, ...
