After essentially inventing the rock opera format, The Who followed the cult favorite TOMMY and numerous aborted rock-opera projects with the album QUADROPHENIA. This film version, directed by Franc Roddam, illuminated the feelings of disillusionment and confusion evident in songs such as "Love Reign O'er Me," "Dr. Jimmy," "The Real Me," and "Bellboy." The film follows the bitter battle between the Mods and the Rockers, two rival biker gangs. The story is seen through the eyes of Jimmy Cooper (Phil Daniels), an angry young man whose hatred of authority and mediocrity is matched only by his passion for rhythm and blues music. When the Mods and Rockers both arrive in Brighton on holiday a riot breaks out, landing Jimmy in prison with Ace (Sting in his acting debut), the idolized leader of the Mods. Jimmy returns to London where his parents kick him out and he loses his job. He then discovers Ace is working as a bootlicking bellboy, leaving Jimmy confused and enraged. He hijacks a scooter and rides to the cliff tops that act as a highly symbolic backdrop for the film's bleak conclusion.

Theatrical release: November 2, 1979. Rock musician Sting makes his acting debut in QUADROPHENIA. Songs include "The Real Me," "Love, Reign O'er Me," and "My Generation."

4 stars Still sharp, but a pity about the soundtrack
Having a brother as a mod, I had to see this in '79. The realism of the violence still shocks, and the documentary style adds to the verasity of the subject. Pity the soundtrack and the soundtrack album weren't up to much. The extras on the DVD were spot-on: Especially the quirky route video/map of London to Brighton.

5 stars Enlightening
When the bass rips into the "Can You See the Real Me", its too late, you are in for a ride. This movie sneaks up on you because you don't realize the seriousness of the situation. In fact, it may take a day for it to sink in. Its explosive, dynamic and captures the rival gang life in england with a microscope. This is a classic and deserves to be seen by any Who fan.

The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus ...

Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases the Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. Nevertheless, it isn't ...

Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, ...
