By the time of 2001's THELEMA, the haunting organs on the periphery of the Murder City Devils' sound had become a central feature of their raucous garage punk. Singer Spencer Moody's bellicose yell remains an acquired taste, but the music is more varied than ever. "Bear Away" is more percolating post-punk than classic garage rock, and the moody "Bride of the Elephant Man" thrives on stabbing guitars and drums that attack from several angles through the keyboard haze. "364 Days" is a fitting final track, as Moody drops the yell for clean singing and the band plays a shaky barroom ballad.

Thelema album
$11.39 THE RICH MAN'S EIGHT TRACK TAPE contains tracks from the ATOMIZER LP, the HEADACHE EP, and the HEARBEAT single.
THE RICH MAN'S EIGHT-TRACK TAPE combines Big Black's debut, ATOMIZER, and a pair of singles. If you are looking for rage and anger in your music, look no further. The opening track, "Jordan, Minnesota," is a narrative based on an alleged child-sex cult in the town of its title--the ...
| | Murder City Devils Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts CD (1998)
Thelema CD music
$10.29 The four-wheel-drive garage punk made by Seattle's Murder City Devils started to reveal an old-fashioned streak on their second album. Still beefy to the point of being hardcore, the songs nonetheless also took on the dusty patina of NUGGETS-era rockers like Question Mark & the Mysterians or shaggy ...

| | Eliza Gilkyson Hard Times In Babylon CDs (2000)
Thelema music CDs
$14.45 Hard Times in Babylon marks Eliza Gilkyson's debut on Red House Records and shows this talented singer/songwriter in fine form. It is not a record full of insta-hits. That's not what Gilkyson is about. Her focus is on the craft of songwriting and making records. Both the songs and her voice sound warmly familiar, comforting, and timeless. "Coast" certainly lends itself to that description, as does "Engineer Bill." Lyrically, Gilkyson avoids the trite and clichéd whenever possible, and achieves some real beauty with her words. Indeed, "Persephone" reads like any great poem should, and would not be lacking had it no melody. Gilkyson's band includes guitarists Matt Andes and Mike Hardwick, bassist Glenn Fukunaga, and drummer Rafael Gayol. Predictably, these guys ...
| | Lynyrd Skynyrd Twenty CD (1997)
Thelema songs
$8.65 The song "Travelin' Man" features one of the final live vocal recordings of Ronnie Van Zant mixed with a new studio vocal by younger brother Johnny Van Zant.
TWENTY, the title of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1997 release, was a reminder that 20 years had passed since the tragic plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmembers Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines. It also marked the first time that ex-Blackfoot guitarist Ricky Medlock appeared on a full Skynyrd studio album as an official member (he was actually an early member of the band prior to their '73 debut). Highlights include the guitar jamfest "Bring It On," "How Soon We Forget," and "None of Us is Free." While not a classic like Skynyrd's '70s output (SECOND HELPING, STREET SURVIVORS, etc.), TWENTY showed that the band was still ...

Thelema CD music
$13.29 Scandinavian bands that deal in English lyrics tend to open themselves up to ridicule -- this is especially true if the Scandinavian band in question is primarily concerned with very serious existential topics. Thus it gets a little hard to suppress the giggle reflex when these guys intone lines like "I became a consumer of the needs you created, alienating ...
