(1 Customer Review)
BRAZILIAN DUOS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Luciana Souza's well-received third record, Brazilian Duos, is a departure in two respects. First, the gifted vocalist is backed not by a jazz quartet, but rather by three different acoustic guitarists -- Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira (playing eight-string), and Walter Santos (her father). Second, Souza turns away from original material and toward classic Brazilian songs by figures like Dori Caymmi, Luiz Gonzaga, Djavan, Jobim, Toninho Horta, and her parents, Walter Santos and Tereza Souza. The range of moods is astounding, from the tongue-twisting virtuosity of the opening "Baiao Medley" and the playfulness of "O Bolo" to the heartbreaking strains of "Pra Dizer Adeus," "Docemente," and "Suas Maos." Souza's voice, poised and attractive enough on its own, becomes a thing of transcendent beauty when matched with these sparse yet vibrant accompaniments. ~ David R. Adler

Brazilian Duos album
$6.29 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated ...
| | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1993)
Brazilian Duos CD music
$12.25 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, ...
| | Stan Getz Getz/Gilberto CD (1963)
Brazilian Duos music CDs
$10.79 The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful ...

Brazilian Duos songs
$12.15 Jenny Ferris sang regularly at Bay Area jazz clubs from the mid-70's through the 80's. In 1985 she recorded a well-received jazz album 'Not So Long Ago' with some of the best musicians around at that time, namely, saxophonist Chuck Clark, pianist Bryce Rohde, bassist Perry Thoorsell and drummer, Dave Meade. In the mid-90's and after a two-year sojourn in New York, things slowed down for Jenny musically. She never stopped singing, but public performances got rarer as she spent more time with her family and at her day job as a special education teacher working with visually impaired students, a job from which she retired in 2004. During this period, from the mid-90's and into the new century, Jenny maintained close friendships with some wonderful musicians who encouraged her to return to singing more frequently professionally. But not until she happened to hear Terry Gross interviewing author Phillip Furia on 'Fresh Air' did Jenny seriously think about getting back into music in a more intense ...
