ETTA JONES SINGS LADY DAY was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
With a career spanning half a century under her belt, Etta Jones' final album (she passed away in 2001) seems entirely fitting, a tribute to the great Billie Holiday. According to the liner notes, they only met a couple of times but Ms. Jones's style was certainly informed by the doyenne, particularly in the liberties with melodic and rhythmic phrasing. But she is no parrot, not by a long shot; as if to prove this point, on the final verse of "Fine And Mellow," Ms. Jones does a pitch-perfect imitation of Lady Day's sound.
Jones's other main influence, Dinah Washington, comes through mostly in the intensely piercing held notes at the end of certain emotionally poignant phrases. Another trademark is her horn-like hiccup across two or more notes, used effectively here during interpretive passages. On hand for the session are long-time partner Houston Person on saxophone and Peter Bernstein on guitar, both of whom add swinging solos without ever overplaying.
Includes liner notes by Sid Gribetz.

Sings Lady Day music CDs
$11.89 On his fourth studio effort, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane charts a softly expansive, reverently adventurous course that by no means shatters expectations, but never fails to impress. Quietly plugging away at his career, never exploiting his family name and focusing exclusively on deeply intellectual, harmonically complex post-bop, the least you can feel when listening to Coltrane is respect. He's not the "edgiest" player you'll ...
| | Here Comes Louis Smith CD (1957) Japan
Sings Lady Day songs
$20.95 Trumpeter Louis Smith was an exciting up-and-coming hard bop player in the 1950's, released two excellent discs on Blue Note, but then went into teaching. (He re-emerged in 1978, recording for Steeplechase Records.) HERE COMES. is, naturally, his debut, and he was accompanied by what turned out to be jazz royalty: Cannonball Adderely, known here as Buckshot La Funke (due to contractual obligations), alto sax; Tommy Flanagan and Duke Jordan alternated on piano, and Art Taylor and Doug Watkins headed up the rhythm section. Smith is firmly in the continuum of bop brass-masters Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, and most of HERE is his originals.
Louis Smith had a brilliant debut on this Blue Note album, his first of two before becoming a ...
