On May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvilleans an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen loved it so much that they hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to record the show for posterity. Performers: John Hartford, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, Union Station, Colin Linden, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, The Whites. The musicians behind the Soggy Bottom Boys, which is the name of the fictional bluegrass band in the Coen brothers's movie O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, are featured in this documentary, which centers on a bluegrass concert in Nashville, Tennessee given by the bands that contributed to O BROTHER's soundtrack, and provides a brief history of folk and bluegrass music. Down From The Mountain Reviews: "...The music speaks for itself....It's at once plain-spoken and otherworldly, grounded in a vanishing rural way of life and uncannily modern..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...It offers many stirring musical performers..."
-- Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter "...If you love this music, you won't need any convincing about how enjoyable DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN is; if you're not yet a fan, this film could be the convincer..."
-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "...The concert itself rocks along in a gentle bluegrass way....DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN is a worthwhile souvenir for fans of the genre..."

Down From The Mountain Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews just ok.... real slow in the beginning and not that great of finish...I would suggest "Gather At The River, a Bluegrass Celebration" Its a much more worthy representation of the cool bluegrass movement. Unique A gem among modern music production. Another proof for the claim: There is no difference between classical, pop or folk music; the only difference exists between good and bad music. 'Down from the mountain' certainly belongs to the best, simply because commercialisation could not spoil the musicians. Submitted by bstrasser (Heilbronn, Germany) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Good editing, but missing music A great documentary of the May 2000 concert, but we are missing some of the better songs like: "I'm in the jailhouse now" & "Man of Constant Sorrow". Dan is there with Alison so they must have sung it--it's on tape somewhere--- Submitted by a reviewer (Burlington, VT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Down From The Mountain movie DVD
$15.05 This Australian coming-of-age comedy/drama features SECRETS AND LIES star Brenda Blethyn as Jeannie, a semi-monstrous mom who gave up a promising career as a British comic to move Down Under and marry a one-hit wonder country singer. One of her two sons is mentally handicapped (Richard Wilson); the other is a sensitive kid named Tim (Kham Chittenden), whose sexual maturity has been waylaid by his clingy mom's fear of being abandoned again (her husband--understandably--left her). He's got to look after his brother and drive Mom to her local club gigs as she attempts a comeback. Complications arise when Tim meets Jill (Emma Booth), a girl cute and bright enough to be worth standing up to his mother for. Director Cherie Nowlan stages the ensuing family fracas in the style of Australia's and England's past working-class comedy hits, like MURIEL'S WEDDING and LIFE IS SWEET. This suits the larger-than-life talents of Blethyn just fine: over the top is her natural habitat and here she inhabits it body and soul. The broad comic strokes are nicely balanced by some subtle shading in the sensitive romance between Tim and his Jill. Chittenden is very likeable, ...
