Flutist Alexander Zonjic offers a strong mix of familiar pop songs and original material served in a great contemporary jazz setting on Reach for the Sky. Zonjic, who toured with Bob James for nearly ten years, extends his flute playing beyond the classical realm and brings its woodwind magic to a point where listeners can accept its resonant qualities in a smooth jazz context. The lyrically pensive yet soaring title track, his lightly grooving cover of Carole King's classic ballad "It's Too Late," Zonjic's breezy take on Bob James' "Angela (Theme From Taxi)," and the unique reading of the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night" form the most memorable songs on the CD. Kirk Whalum, Chuck Mangione, Jeff Lorber, and Kevyn Lettau all contributed significant compositions, but the approach and direction on Reach for the Sky reflects Alexander Zonjic's profound musical philosophy and songs listeners can connect to. This CD picks up where his 1993 recording, titled Passion, left off. While the latter spotlighted several musical styles and periods, Reach for the Sky pushes new limits and places a new instrument -- the flute -- at the forefront of the smooth style of jazz. ~ Paula Edelstein

| | Gerald Albright Kickin' It Up CD (2004)
Reach For The Sky songs
$14.15 It's hard to deny that saxophonist Gerald Albright often gave up playing "jazz" -- at least the snob definition -- in favor of urban radio and smooth jazz radio acceptance. During his years on the Atlantic label (1987-1997), his full-lengths contained big hits surrounded by lackluster songs. The exception was the "real jazz" album (snob definition again) Live at Birdland West, which kicked up the excitement a notch. After leaving Atlantic his first record for GRP, Groovology, was freer and more fun. Maybe it wasn't "real jazz," but it was really good. Nothing was so sweet and staid that it made you wince and the excitement was certainly back. Kickin' It Up continues along these lines, and if it isn't as well constructed as Groovology, it will at least keep the Albright faithful coming back. Albright still plays the jazz-pop that's kept him in the money, but once again he adds little flourishes and playful embellishments that are the ...
| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
Reach For The Sky album
$9.59 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better ...
