Yes brings its sweeping brand of art rock to new heights with MAGNIFICATION, the band's first orchestral album since 1970's TIME AND A WORD. The tried and true quartet of Anderson, Squire, Howe, and White have done justice to this album's title; their latest sonic landscape is both magnified and enhanced by composer/arranger Larry Groupe. Groupe's role so symbiotic and integral it's as if he's a longtime band member in Yes and his instrument is the orchestra he conducts.
What sets MAGNIFICATION apart from your typical rock-band-with-orchestra project is the arrangements. Rather than adding clutter or tacky overstatement, the orchestral parts take on a voice that at times acts as subtle foundation, and finds the perfect moments to act as a lead "instrument." The title track strolls with majesty, following with the crushing emotional crescendos of "Spirit of Survival." The trademark Yes chorus is splendidly present on "Don't Go," which breaks into a quirky, theatric mid-section. A dramatic score opens "Give Love Each Day" as the band shows a beauty and restraint lacking in many of their progressive rock contemporaries. The epic suite "In The Presence Of" shows just how influential Yes has been in setting the standards that define their genre.

Magnification Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A new sound for Yes On this album, Yes has essentially replaced their revolving-door keyboardist position with a full 50-piece orchestra. On some tracks ("Can You Imagine", "In The Presence Of") this tradeoff works well, while on others ("Spirit of Survival, Don't Go") they would have been better served by a session keyboard player. While still the same kind of epic progressive music as Yes produced in their heyday, this music is slightly less adventurous as well, with a straight-ahead 4/4 rock beat driving most of the album and providing less for the progressive rock fan to grab onto and more for everyone else in the world. Those with short attention spans will miss out on an emotional pop gem in "Give Love Each Day" while the title track is a nice piece of late 60's to early 70's psychedelia ala the Moody Blues. A worthwhile album, but not their best work.

MAGNIFICATION...Glorification This Album is every bit as good as many of Yes' classic albums, if not better. The orchesrra adds certain colors to the music that without which, Yes' vision would not be fully realized Submitted by a reviewer (Fairfax, CA,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Magnifico ! The Magic is back.
Yes shows in Magnification a mature, relaxed and brilliant work with masterpieces as "We Agree" (probably Yes' best song since Awaken).
With the exception of "Don't Go" all the tunes are very good, beautifully accompanied by an orchestra.
If you are a Yes fan, go get; if you aren't, go get it...you won't be disappointed. Submitted by danisol (Lima-Peru) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This one will grow on you. Hit the repeat button! Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White team up with Larry Groupe and an orchestra to create a wonderful soundscape that brings Yes into the 21st century. I admit that this one took a few listens to digest, but now it's one of many favorite Yes albums. Highlights include Chris Squire's lead vocal on "Can You Imagine", and "Dreamtime". Symphonic Yes rocks This is a really good underrated Yes record. On this one, they replaced the keyboards with a symphonic orchestra playing the keyboard synth parts. As a result, the symphony blends in with Yes nicely, not becoming too grandiose nor too trivial, but another instrument blending in the normal Yes stye. It sounds great, and the songs are a kind of hybrid between the Close To The Edge style with a bit of the later "Owner of A Lonely Heart" style. I've been pleasantly surprised by this one, and I play it repeatedly, it's good both for focused intent listening pleasure and background music. One of their better later ones. Submitted by Andrew M. Magnification album
$6.85 The high point of Kansas's long career, 1977's POINT OF KNOW RETURN found the American heartlanders finally striking the perfect balance between complex prog-rock, hard-hitting heavy guitar work, and crafty pop sensibilities. This is perhaps best exemplified by the title cut, a sparkling tune full of jaunty interaction between piano and violin that moves unerringly through some tricky musical maneuvers, while remaining engagingly catchy and accessible. The electrifying riffs that fly around in "Lightning's Hand" and "The Spider" show that the knack for tunes like the previous album's classic "Carry On ...

"The Barry Williams Show" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Though much effort has obviously been put into the sonic details of UP's production, and to fine effect, the album seems to represent not so much a new direction for Peter Gabriel, but rather a consolidation of the styles he's mined in preceding years. ...

$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming ...

Magnification album
$17.59 In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening "Immigrant Song," reinventing the blues form on "Heartbreaker," and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on "Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog."
This being 1972, the band had made ...

$11.49 This CD is like honey from the rock to the weary, to those with more questions than answers, these songs bring hope. We are gifted by our Creator to comfort one another with the comfort that we've been comforted with. Just like most of you, David has lived life, had some hard times, been through some "stuff". The songs on this CD come from deep waters and are full of the power of paradox: When you lose, then you win,as you give you receive, the weak are strong by God's grace. At first glance at some of the song titles and it may not look like a CD for the faint of heart. However, just one listen to the song samples will convince you that those that are struggling will find, ...
