Continuing his move out of the Nashville country-pop that made him a star and back into the traditional bluegrass that was always his first love, 2001's excellent HISTORY OF THE FUTURE is yet another fine bluegrass album by Ricky Skaggs and his band, Kentucky Thunder. Traditional enough to kick off with a new arrangement of the bluegrass standard "Shady Grove" and to close with the traditional folk tune "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms," HISTORY OF THE FUTURE is otherwise heavy on originals by Skaggs and members of his band, including the swell "Road To Spencer" and the rollicking train song "One Way Track."
