The songs on LAST MAN ON EARTH were written in the wake of the passing of Loudon Wainwright's mother. While this experience set the usually good-humored singer-songwriter emotionally adrift, it provided the inspiration for a batch of tunes that look in a trenchant, unflinching manner at mortality and its complex ramifications. "Missing You" and "Homeless," which bookend the disc, are simple, eloquent statements of loss. "I'm Not Gonna Cry," which manages a degree of dark humor despite its turbulent subtext, is concerned with the inevitable phase of denial following such a loss.
On the emotionally complex "Surviving Twin," Wainwright looks back at the difficulties he experienced in his relationship with his late father. Towards the end of LAST MAN ON EARTH, just before reaching the overly cranky title song that's the album's sole dead spot, Wainwright offers a trio of tunes pondering his own fate. These are as distinctive and penetrating as anything he's ever written. Leaving the light-hearted stuff behind for a while, this album is a deep, moving meditation on a universal subject too seldom dealt with effectively in song.

Last Man On Earth album
$13.85 Social and political commentary has always been a component of Loudon Wainwright's songwriting. The 15 songs that make up SOCIAL STUDIES were written during the course of the decade prior and first aired in shorter solo versions on National Public Radio. For the most part, Wainwright wrote these songs to order--he was given a topic and asked to frame a reaction to it in his biting and sarcastic lyrics.
From Jesse Helms to O.J. Simpson to Tanya Harding, Wainwright takes it all on with rapier-sharp wit. The album was produced by ...

Last Man On Earth CD music
$10.15 Principally recorded at Largo Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Loudon Wainwright III.
So Damn Happy was Loudon Wainwright III's third live album, following 1979's A Live One and 1993's Career Moves (and not counting 1975's half-live Unrequited and 1998's collection of airchecks, BBC Sessions). Of its 17 songs, one, the autobiographical "Westchester County," first appeared on 1983's Fame and Wealth (and reappeared on Career Moves); another, "The Home Stretch," came from 1986's More Love Songs; four came from 1992's History; three from 1995's Grown Man; two from 1998's Little Ship; one, "Tonya's Twirls," from 1999's Social Studies; and five were new. (The Last Man on Earth, the album ...

| | Doyle Lawson School Of Bluegrass CDs (2004)
Last Man On Earth album
$15.89 In the pop music world, it's not at all unusual for a very popular or highly influential band to release a collection of outtakes, rehearsal tapes, previously unreleased live tracks and other odds and ends. In the bluegrass world, it's almost unheard of. But Doyle Lawson is a figure of such stature, and his band Quicksilver has been (in its various configurations) such a constant and powerful presence on the bluegrass scene, that this two-disc, 50-track collection of rehearsals, ...
