| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Lower East Side Stories album
$8.85 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is ...
| | Best Of The Gap Band CD (1995)
Lower East Side Stories CD music
$11.99 A collection from the Mercury funk lineup that covers the hits from the first five Gap Band albums. Every major hit that they had is included here. What one might notice is that all of the major hits ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Burn Rubber on Me," "Early in the Morning," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance") all sound surprisingly similar. This may or may not be a large surprise to everyone, but the bright note about their similarity is that the basic riffs and rhythms that they all use are extremely catchy. The energy that the Gap Band exudes in the midst of producing a song is stunning, and this compilation displays that to the fullest extent. For a basic introduction to the forms of funk that the Gap Band followed, this album would certainly suit any given listener. For those who only need one Gap Band album in their collection, this one also fits the bill perfectly. For die-hard fans who already have all of the band's albums, this one would probably only really serve as a summary. ~ Adam Greenberg

Lower East Side Stories music CDs
$19.99 EUPHORIA draws on material recorded for Mercury and RCA, offering a thorough survey of the first phase of the Youngbloods' career. Taking their name from an earlier solo album by singer Jesse Colin Young, the quartet laid down five tracks that were shelved until 1970. Four of those songs open this collection, followed by "Grizzly Bear," a minor 1966 hit written by guitarist Jerry Corbitt.
"Grizzly Bear" generated some useful airplay ...

| | Michael Hearne & Friends Live At The Old Blinking Light CD (2004)
Lower East Side Stories CD music
$25.29 There's tons of music out there that never gets played on the radio. You can find it in clubs in places like Austin, at music festivals, and you can dig for it on the Internet. Michael Hearne and Friends Live at the Old Blinking Light is a great example of this music - real music played by real people with life and energy. Mike and some of his friends play regularly at the Old Blinking Light in Taos, New Mexico. If you can make it there, do; or else you can buy this CD. The main players on this album are Mike Hearne, a singer/songwriter in the classic Texas style who happens to live in New Mexico, Jimmy Stadler, invariably referred to as "the dynamic Jimmy Stadler", a keyboard and mandolin player who adds spice to the record, and Kelly Stebbins, a waitress at the OBL who sings torch-style songs. The evening's entertainment recorded on this CD covers a lot of ground musically, from bar songs and two-steps through blues and Cajun-infused tracks. The one thread running through the two-disc set is love of music and ...
