| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Melodious Movement
$13.09 Personnel: John Zorn (alto saxophone); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Uri Caine (piano); Greg Cohen (bass instrument); Joey Baron (drums). Audio Mixer: James Farber. Recording information: Avatar Studio, New York, NY (02/22/2009). STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds ...

| | Pixies CD (2002)
Melodious Movement
$11.29 These mostly unreleased tracks are left over from the session which also produced The Pixies' first album. The Pixies: Black Francis (vocals, guitar); Kim Deal (vocals, bass); Joey Santiago (guitar); David Lovering (drums). Recorded at Fort Apache Studios, Roxbury, Massachusetts in March 1987. Personnel: Black Francis (vocals, guitar); Kim Deal (vocals); Joey Santiago (guitar); David Lovering (drums). Recording information: Fort Apache, Roxbury, MA (03/1987). Most Pixies fans know that the mini-album Come On Pilgrim was taken from The Purple Tape, the 17-song demo the group cut during their first studio session in 1987. Fifteen years later, Pixies answer the nagging question, "What became of the rest of the demos?" While many of them appeared on bootlegs, this nine-song collection is a useful document for die-hard Pixies fans, not only because it compiles all the remaining demos in one place, but because it also sheds some light on the band's creative process. The Purple Tape is arguably the purest version of the Pixies' sound, buzzing with the vitality of the band laying down their crazed songs as quickly as possible -- 17 of them in three days -- and relatively free of the abrasive and glossy influences that producers Steve Albini and Gil Norton brought to their subsequent work. Interestingly, the remaining songs from The Purple Tape didn't all appear on the group's first full album, Surfer Rosa, though that's where several of them ended up; instead, the Pixies returned to these songs throughout their career, dispersing them in a surprisingly even fashion through Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde. As with any collection of demos, the main attraction here is in hearing what the band changed or discarded, and Pixies deliver the goods. The previously unreleased (officially, anyway) "Rock a My Soul" may be the album's biggest treasure, an irresistible throwaway that captures the Pixies at their poppiest and most cryptic. As good as any of their B-sides and, arguably, some of their later album tracks, it's too bad the group never found room for it on an album or single. Conversely, several of the songs that did show up on later albums and ...

| | Singlefaze Chapter II: Reinvented CD (2009)
Melodious Movement
$12.69 Singlefaze started as a simple idea. Brian Hess, originally the bands front man, wanted to start a project that would last. He had two goals in mind; Make great music and keep Singlefaze alive. Through many member changes and position changes, both goals are being realized. Singlefaze consists of Angela Lopez (Vocals/Viola), Jeremy Driesler (Guitar), Ron Coleman (Bass), and Hess (Drums). It’s current members have been together since July 2007.Singlefaze unleashed an 8 song LP titled “4-6” in May 2008. It utilized 3 vocalists and a heavy amount of viola. They were still trying to figure out exactly who they were, as there had been so many member changes just months before. Says Hess, “It is ...
