In the late 1960s, Peter Green was one of a handful of British lead guitar heroes who were turning the music industry upside down. As a member of the original version of Fleetwood Mac, Green's tortured lead work was on a par with Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page and many championed him as the top of the heap. Unfortunately, Green's promise came crashing down quickly, as drugs and his involvement with the occult drove him from the band and public life. He sold his beloved Les Paul guitar to become a grave digger and severed all ties to show business. Over the years, he has slowly eased himself back into it, making surprise appearances at other stars' concerts and starting to play regularly again. While his legions of true believers wait for him to find his way back to full recovery, we have this album, recorded after a successful American tour with his regular band, the Peter Green Splinter Group. So how does Green fare on this outing? Well, there's no original material here, but his guitar playing definitely shows flashes of the old brilliance in spots. His voice, although a tad rusty in reaching for the high notes, has generally aged well, never gaining full roar and totally laid-back, much like the slower items in the early Fleetwood Mac songbook. Restraint is the operative word here and those expecting guitar fireworks like the old days had better turn to their old Fleetwood Mac records. Green's not a basket case on these sides, but those heralding this disc as a full-fledged return to greatness should listen a bit harder. There's some great music aboard but you'll have to search for it on an album that never really gets out of second gear. Laid-back only begins to describe this one. ~ Cub Koda

Q (9/99, p.107) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...it's a sleek blues groove with a smoky funk backbeat which steps back for still-elegant and fluid guitar solos. Strong on the late-night atmospherics, these songs are steeped in weariness and pain but emerge with life-affirming zest..." Peter Green Splinter Group Destiny Road Songs Destiny Road Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Rockin' Blues, British Style Comparing Peter Green then and now, his delivery of the blues has aged like fine wine. His vocals may not always be precise, but he's not supposed to be Johnny Adams, and his soft, at times raspy vocals are world-weary and filled with a lot of feeling - a style distinct to Green.
The album overall is pretty easy to digest, consisting of generally strong-rhythm songs in a thoroughly modern style. These are not purist's blues, instead infusing elements of rock, jazz, and even funk. Green's guitar playing is subtle yet tasty and razor-sharp. The band sounds tight and feels cohesive. Nigel is singing on several numbers, and he's really not a blues singer - more like pop/rock style to me, but nevertheless the songs are all pleasant and really quite pretty.
The sound quality is excellent, with prominent bass lines. The CD comes in a good-looking paper "digipack" with a scant booklet. Submitted by Denis (NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$13.55 For his fourth solo release, and third on the Evidence label, the Fabulous Thunderbirds' guitarist, Kid Ramos, once again calls in some high-profile blues friends for assistance. Instead of last album's guitarists and jump blues horns, this time Ramos sticks with harpists/vocalists to provide the momentum on a set of relatively stripped-down, greasy blues. He's also the only guitarist on the sessions, which makes this a spotlight for his picking as well as his bandleading abilities. Harmonica aces Rick Estrin (Little Charlie & the Nightcats), Paul de Lay, Lynwood Slim, Johnny Dyer, James Harman (who only plays on one of his three tracks and sings on the others), and Charlie Musselwhite, along with Rod Piazza, all contribute. The leadoff title cut, an instrumental that sounds like it was left over from his last horn-infused West Coast album, is the one exception. The sessions were cut in two days, which gives them a raw, not quite primal edge that adds to the gritty nature of the recording. Although the original intent was to perform exclusively covers, nearly all the harp-playing guests brought in their own original material. Just a handful of interpretations remain: Willie Dixon's "I Don't Care Who Knows"; an obscure ...
