RCA was Dottie West's recording home during the most commercially successful years of her career and, accordingly, much of her best material was released on that label. RCA COUNTRY LEGENDS concentrates primarily on her work from the mid 1960s to the early '70s, a period when West was arguably at her best, as evidenced by her many charting hits from the time ("Here Comes My Baby," "Would You Hold It Against Me," and "Paper Mansions," among them, all of which are here).
But this set isn't merely a collection of singles (fans looking for a tidy summary of West's chart-toppers should look to THE ESSENTIAL DOTTIE WEST). Instead, this RCA package includes a nice mix of lesser-known album tracks alongside the hits, making it an even-handed representation of the period. All of the work on this top-notch comp boasts the classic Nashville sound of the period and, of course, West's alluring vocals.

In 2004 Collectables combined Skeeter Davis' 1965 album Blueberry Hill and her 1973 album The End of the World on one disc. Blueberry Hill finds Davis firmly in country-pop territory. Her strong vocals are surrounded by strings and syrupy arrangements and many of the songs are simple and corny ("The Little Music Box," "Lost to a Geisha Girl"). Davis sounds fully invested in the songs, though, and her aching sound manages to overcome ...

True to the album's title, it has been eight years since the last platter of original material from Webb Wilder. Although this disc -- his sixth since 1989 -- isn't worth a wait of that length, it is a terrific addition to the rather meager Wilder catalog. Produced by ...
