The masterful fusion of street funk, sensual R&B, and contemporary jazz that Boney James accomplishes on Ride continues to make him a favorite with listeners around the world. The multi-talented saxophonist, keyboardist, producer, and composer wrote or co-wrote nine of the songs for this ten-song program and features such stellar guest talent as Marcus Miller, R&B singer Jaheim on the title track, Dave Hollister's gospel-flavored street style heard on "Something Inside," and Trina Broussard's crystal-clear vocals on the opening track, "Heaven." Boney James recorded two of the songs live in the studio, seasons "This Is the Life" with a tropical flavoring complete with steel pans, and downright floors listeners on the groove-oriented "See What I'm Sayin'," with Marcus Miller's funky basslines doing the walking while Boney James' saxophone does the talking. Ride is more intense and funkier than James' duet collaboration with trumpeter Rick Braun on Shake It Up, but doesn't stray far from his ability to do just that. It's definitely a smooth ride and one listeners will enjoy. ~ Paula Edelstein For his eighth release RIDE, jazzy saxophonist and keyboardist Boney James picks up where he left off navigating deftly from smooth jazz to R&B and back again. While loyal listeners will quickly recognize that they've been over Boney's familiar terrain before, smooth jazz fans will undoubtedly find this ride veering more deeply into rhythm-and-blues territory as James keeps a steady balance of both. James gets things going right from the start with singer Trina Broussard's soulful vocals warmly inviting us to hop aboard on "Heaven." The journey picks up pace as it works it way through the jazzy "Grand Central" before stepping it up with "RPM," the CD's curiously aerobic-paced mover. With the help of R&B crooners Dave Hollister and Jahiem, James playfully steers listeners through pleasing melodic ballads before adding backbone to the upbeat "See What I'm Sayin'?" courtesy of bass mastermind and producer Marcus Miller. This ride saves the best for last with "This Is The Life," as Andy Narell's steel pans and Paulinho DaCosta's percussion add just the right amount of Caribbean flavor to the robust, jazzy closer.

Ride Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews fantastic!!!!!!!!! Buying Boney James CDS, I don't expect nothing less. All of his music is "5star". This CD "Ride" is right up there with his ohter CDs. All I can say is that, once you purchase this CD, you won't be disappionted! Submitted by jrs (Pasadena, CA. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Boney Bombs on this one!! I agree with the above comments. This CD is the worst ever. I'm used to the smooth jazz jammin Boney from his Body Language CD on back. He definetely puts the smooth in smooth jazz but on this CD it can hardly be classified as jazz let alone smooth. I still love Boney to death but this CD gots ta go! He needs to stick to his original style which we all love so much which entitles him the king of "Smooth Jazz" Submitted by a reviewer (Los Angeles, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jazz, hip hop! I LIKED THE CD, BUT I WISHED HE STICK TO THE FORMAT THAT MAKES HIM ''Smooth! RETURN BACK TO THE ''ROOTS'' AND KEEP MAKING IT GROOVIN, AS WELL AS FUNKY LIKE ''SWEET THING''. Submitted by a reviewer (Bridgeton New Jersey) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

revelations When I first heard the artist Boney James I thought his music can't be all that great, but when I heard his music I was bought down to my knees. His style and sound brings so much that he is singing to life and it relates so much to everyday living. I went out and purchased all of his CD's and am hoping to get the chance to hear him in person on April 6th in New York. Thanks for the chance to express my rude awakening to the true experience of what Jazz really is. Submitted by a reviewer (east orange, new jersey, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$13.29 In Light's opener, "St. Tropez," the simplest and sparsest piece on an album notable for its simplicity and sparseness, consists entirely of a single two-note figure in a pure-sounding electric piano tone, repeated continuously while a second voice in the same timbre meanders sympathetically, soloistically around it. It firmly and economically establishes a sense of stillness and contemplative calm: not quite the warmth and contentment suggested by the piece's Mediterranean title or the album's grainy cover shot of a sunset (presumably, Arp being Californian) over the sea -- though certainly far from the opposite of those things -- but a gentle, hopeful quietude with the slight air of clinical detachment. A similar sense carries, somewhat less deterministically, throughout In Light, whose title accordingly seems to connote the ...
