The press release calls Jakens Tid "trollish hoedown metal," which is to say that Finntroll incorporates some of the folk- and polka-based musics indigenous to their native Finland into their Wagnerian death metal. The fusion of styles apparently began as a drunken experiment, and it's hard to tell whether the resulting humor was intended or not. Indeed, it is hard to listen to this Tolkein-esque death metal square dance without experiencing flashbacks to Spinal Tap's Stonehenge scene. Although Finntroll's synthesis of traditional Finnish music and black metal is worth noting for its adventurousness, it falls short of its ambitions: to be an eerie and hostile new genre in the metal world. Rather, it sounds prankish and silly -- how could a polka influence but undermine the intended threat of a death metal band? ~ Andy Hinds
Additional personnel includes: Jonne (vocals, guitar).
Recording information: Sundicoop Studios (12/2000-01/2001).
Finntroll: Katla (vocals); Somnium (acoustic guitar, guitar, background vocals); Trollhorn (keyboards); Tundra (bass, background vocals); B. Dominator (drums, percussion, background vocals).

| Jaktens Tid Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Finnish Death Metal in Finnish Another fine example of melodic norweigen death metal. What makes this even better is that every song is in Finnish... sure I don't speak or understand a word, but that's what I love about Rammstein too. The only drawback here is that many of the melodies are bit disconnected from the heavy guitars. Which is what makes them a lot different from Children of Bodom, which is why I even heard about Finntroll.
All in all, excellent melodic Finnish Death Metal ! Submitted by thecarcassman (Portland, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Once Again Superior The fast and melodic accordion and the heavy metal guitar with some drumming from heaven with quick double pedals makes this one of the best album ever. Also throw in a strong influence of polka music and Swedish lyrics about trolls and nordic folk-mythology. Now turn the blender on and mix em all together real nice and you suddenly got Finntroll.
A really original band, a really original album.

THE WORLD ISNT READY FOR THIS BAND Who would have thought that a band from Finalnd of all places, who mix polka and folk music with various forms of heavy metal could possibly sound this good? I had already heard the band's newest release: Nattfodd. And Jaktens Tid showed me the steady background from which this band came. I now belive more than I did before that this band has a long and unpredictable career ahead of them. The melodies are infectious and catchy in a way that almost defies descrition. The lyrics may be in Finnish, but who cares? If Sweden wasn't already the metal capital of the world, Finland would be the hottest locale for all of today's peeking metal acts, with Finntroll leading the pack!

Finnish Folk-Polka Black Metal! This unique mix of folkish tunes and crushing black metal will have you dancing around the room before you know what hit you. All elements of this album are combined exceptionally. And for the record, they are from Finland, however, the lyrics are written in Swedish. Hail Finntroll! Jaktens Tid album
$11.49 Finnish folk-influenced melodic death metal produced by Flemming Rasmussen. Spinefarm. 2004.
Much like the sword-wielding Norseman depicted on its front sleeve, the eponymous debut album from Ensiferum unexpectedly invaded the new millennium's budding Viking metal landscape, speedily conquered the loyalties of unsuspecting listeners, and proceeded to set up a permanent settlement within the hearts of many devoted metal fans of all stripes. The strategy for this wholesale takeover was really quite simple, as the Finnish band obviously took stock of the broad inspirational foundations laid down by Sweden's pioneering Bathory before matching them with the more readily accessible songcraft perfected by countrymen Amorphis (while wisely subtracting Finntroll's goofy polka rhythms), to achieve a finely balanced and damn near irresistible Viking folk-metal ...

Jaktens Tid CD music
$14.05 2004 album from the Finnish 'trollish hoedown metal' act. Ten tracks including the first single 'Trollhammaren'. Century Media. 2004.
Finntroll's second album, 2004's Nattfodd, offers yet another confounding manifestation of their weird splicing of black/death metal brutality with Finnish folk music -- more specifically, the quite uppity, polka-like form known as "humppa." Yes, it's all quite daft, to be honest, and we haven't even touched upon the no doubt drunken sextet's fantasy-based lyrics -- sung entirely in Swedish, naturally. Further enhanced by mood-setting sound effects (ocean sounds, horses galloping, birds chirping, seagull's squawking, etc.), mind-boggling tunes like "Fiskarens Fiende" and "Marksnadsvisan" are usually spared utter ...
| | Wintersun CD (2004)
Jaktens Tid music CDs
$13.85 At first glance, a Finnish heavy metal band named Wintersun, whose album cover shows a fallen warrior lying face down in the snow, might elicit thoughts of simplistic black metal infused with pagan or anti-Christian messages, but it doesn't take long for this eponymous debut to prove that first impressions can be deceiving. In fact, the new project of former Ensiferum and Arthemesia vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jari Mäenpäa merges the hyper-fast precision of Yngwie Malmsteen-like guitar playing (witness the speedy "Beyond the Dark Sun") with the melodic sensibilities of post-Helloween power metal (see the more diverse "Winter Madness") and a homegrown passion for folk-styled songwriting descended straight from trailblazing compatriots Amorphis. If there is any sign of black metal songwriting to be found here, it's in the majestic symphonic backdrops draped all over the ever more ambitious offerings that follow: ...

| | Big League Babe, Vol. 2: The Christine Lavin Tribute Album CD (1998)
Jaktens Tid music CDs
$16.45 Though the two Christine Lavin tribute albums are tributes in the traditional sense -- they feature mostly songs written by Lavin done by other people -- they also fit into a more general category of records Lavin has been associated with previously, such as the various artists compilations On a Winter's Night and When October Goes, in that they provide a showcase for other performers. Like the first Big League Babe album, the second has a CD booklet filled with information about the people on the record, including their biographies, discographies and contact information. Lavin has always been as interested in promoting her friends' careers as her own. But especially because her own work is so idiosyncratic, sentimental, and, usually, funny, it works less well for others than it does for her, and that's as true of this album as it was of the first one. A somewhat less stellar lineup of artists nevertheless includes Buddy Mondlock (whose "Santa Monica Pier" catches its gentle satire), Sara Hickman (who can't redeem "The Dakota"), Dar Williams (duetting with Hugh Blumenfeld on "The Kind of Love You Never Recover From," which David Wilcox sang on the first album), and Patty Larkin (who contributes an instrumental version of "Prisoners of Their Hairdos"), along with other lesser-known folk performers and one Broadway star, James Naughton. None of the performances are as funny as Lavin's own (though the Brecht-Weill arrangement of "Sensitive New Age Guys" -- in German! -- is cute), nor as touching. And there is a curious ...
