Recording information: Master Track Studio A, Crowley, LA. The growth from her earliest albums is wonderful for this sensuous singer; no longer are her albums held back by the repetitious beats that used to ensnare her early discs. Most importantly, she is using that wonderful, husky voice that is her natural and best asset to wrap around her insightful lyrics, which reflect a woman's point of view. She is one of the few female zydeco performers who is worth the price of admission. She does sound her best on the slower tempo of "Days Gone By," where she can work with the full expressiveness of her voice. She always seems to sing with a heartfelt integrity in her voice. She started performing in about 1995, when in one night she went to her first zydeco dance to hear Boozoo Chavis and fell in love with both the music and her to-be husband, Morris. Morris had his own band and played the accordion, which she learned by watching him and practicing when he was off at work. She showed him what she could do one day and eventually began leading the band; he is the bass player. She writes most of her own songs, which is a rarity for most zydeco performers, no matter their gender. When she cranks up "Zydeco for a Living," that voice of hers sets the temperature soaring. There is room here to grow, but this is a very solid effort by someone who you'd better keep your eye on. ~ Bob GottliebLiving Blues (5-6/02, p.60) - "...The combination of Ledet's steamy vocals and bluesy accordian riffs makes for one of the most irresistible sounds in all of zydeco..." Show Me Something
$10.19 Principal cast includes: Debbie Allen (Charity); Bebe Neuwirth, Michael Rupert, Allison Williams, Mark Jacoby. Recorded at National Recording Studio, New York on May 5, 1986. Includes liner notes by Martin Gottfried. Lyricist: Dorothy Fields. Personnel: Debbie Allen (vocals); Allison Williams, Irving Allen Lee, Mark Jacoby, Michael Rupert, Bebe Neuwirth (vocals); Cy Coleman (piano). Audio Mixers: Cy Coleman; Michael Berniker; Paul Goodman . Audio Remasterer: Alan Silverman. Liner Note Author: Martin Godfried. Recording information: National Recording Studio, New York, NY. Arranger: Ray Ellis. Twenty years after the original production, Sweet Charity returned to Broadway in the spring of 1986, again directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. This time, Debbie Allen instead of Gwen Verdon starred as the hapless but hopeful dancehall dancer Charity Hope Valentine, and despite her dancing ability, she was not able to put her stamp on the role as Verdon had, a serious failing in a work that was essentially a star vehicle. Still, the show was sufficiently well staged to earn the Tony Award for best musical revival, along with three other awards (not including one for Allen, who was nominated but lost), and it went on to run a respectable 368 performances. On disc, Allen's shortcomings are less noticeable than the musical revisions to the score enacted by composer and album co-producer Cy Coleman.
