The title of this debut album by southern rapper Petey Pablo tells a lot about the context. Rather than just a bunch of randomly assembled rhymes, DIARY OF A SINNER is a concept album of sorts, in which a gangsta slowly but surely unravels the complex, unsavory details of his life, from the first fall from grace on through. There's a strong religious underpinning to the album as well, as the conflict between faith in God and the pursuit of the gangsta lifestyle is reiterated throughout these tracks. There's also a gospel sensibility that crops up occasionally amid the blazing hip-hop tracks. The end of this sinner's story is a happy one, though, as Pablo delivers "My Testimony," stepping back from the violence and taking solace in the love of his family. It doesn't hurt matters that Timbaland offers some of the distinctive, sonically rich production that is his trademark, giving DIARY OF THE SINNER a compelling audio sheen.

Petey really told yall!!!! How can you go past this? be honest. One of the best rap releases of 2001 without doubt. From beginning to end, petey delivers the tracks that keep tha party pumpin and the crowd jumpin as well as the tracks that keep the listener's attention for other, more sentimental and emotional reasons. Also, if you bother to listen to some of the skits on the end of some of the tracks, most noteably Didn't I, The Fun Room and Do Dat, you'll find the man's injected humour into the album. oh yeah, and he praises Jive, probably more than he should, but hey. His flow's original, versitile and he'll do well in the rap business without doubt. oh yeah and before i forget, the guy can actually sing! This is a classic dont hate man this cd is hot like lava..... petey is original thats why lames cant catch on quick..... but his realness from "test of my faith" to his party appetite quinching "i" is bar none the most original and hottest thing out of the south.... luda is hot TI is hot but none of them can survive on anything other than thuggness.... petey on the other hand touches real down south bred feelings such as being a "fool for love" and talking to the lord in church... i dont think anyone who is from the south relates like mr barrett himself.... the 24s and the flashin come from up north but the soul morals and the history and religion come from down south and my man petey touched on all that on this cd not a weak song on it if you a music much less hip hop fan... his second entry will have a hard time topping this......... classic trust me Submitted by pac (Dirty south) Was This Review Helpful? Diary Of A Sinner: 1st Entry album
$12.75 Although it's rather easy, and not at all inaccurate, to compare Rose Kemp to someone like PJ Harvey, a more precise comparison would in fact be to Jeff Buckley, specifically to the Jeff Buckley on Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, the collection of posthumously released demo tracks. The thing is, however, where Sketches was supposed to sound unfinished and raw, because it was, Kemp's A Hand Full of Hurricanes is meant, ostensibly, ...
