Solarized tosses together all the components needed for universal stoner rock on Driven, the New Jersey outfit's 2001 Meteor City offering. Vocalist James Hogan, guitarist Dave Topolenski, drummer Reg Santana, and bassist Mike Fiore dish out some compact but downright lethal songs on this release. The riffs are appropriately heavy, and include all the right '70s proto-metal references. Stoner pioneers Kyuss come to mind when listening to the massive grooves on tracks like "Chrome Shop." The cowbell-driven "Angel" is another highlight with its fine linear riffing. Upbeat miscalculations "Stab Yor Back" and "Firefight" halt Driven's momentum, before "Conspiracy" and "World Without End" finish off the disc with a hazy blast of New Jersey stoner rock. On this record, Solarized demonstrates its ability to riff on the best elements of the geographically separate but thematically similar approaches of its genre. ~ Vincent Jeffries
Hallucinogenic sci-fi lyricism and a superfuzz sound which combines Hendrix with Sabbath - as cosmic groove rock goes, New Jersey quartet Solarized have got it all. KKKK (out of 5) - Kerrang!

| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Driven album
$10.45 Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six ...
| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Driven CD music
$13.55 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy ...
