The pieces on The Liturgy of Ghosts by the fascinating improvising quintet, The Unstable Ensemble, were all culled from a tour during the summer of 2001, and feature several guests. The styles covered range from the elegiac, wistful tones of the lovely opener through sparser territory of the sort more usually encountered on the fringes of the European free improv avant-garde. At its best, on tracks like "In the Fullness of Time," the combined, complex drones of Eric Weddle's no-input mixing board and Jason Bivins' guitar evoke the thick, palpable, sonic space achieved by bands like AMM, alive with activity and dense with awareness.
