| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Kilowatt
$10.35 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, ...

$9.94 | | Al Jarreau Christmas CD (2008)
Kilowatt
$8.89 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.

| | Ugk Too Hard To Swallow CD (1992)
Kilowatt
$8.99 Truth in advertising, Too Hard to Swallow is UGK before they got funked up, grinding over some minimal, hard beats that aren't as complementary to their delivery as the smoother production they would later favor. Still, thanks to members Bun B and Pimp C's ability to write memorable rhymes, the album -- which repeats some tracks from their impossible to find indie release The Southern Way -- is a winner with three mammoth singles so important to the UGK story. "Something Good" puts a crooked beat under Rufus' most popular number, "Use Me Up" tells its pissed-off tale over a Bill Withers sample, and "Pocket Full of Stones" is a classic tale of crack rocks, Cadillacs, and making bail. The mucho macho "Cramping My Style" is a fan favorite with "hump and dump" lyrics that didn't really play nice with radio, and the snide "I'm So Bad" is a great example of how well Pimp C can offend and amuse at the same time. While most will prefer the Kingz' later sound, this is some fans' favorite album thanks to its unforgiving punch and visceral, controversial, cop-killer lyrics. ~ David Jeffries

| | Indonesia, Vol. 8 CD (1995)
Kilowatt
$13.79 Volume eight in the twenty-fold Music of Indonesia series presented by Smithsonian Folkways concentrates upon vocal and instrumental music from east and central Flores, a volcanic island lying to the east of Bali. Some of the polyphony heard here has been compared with the kind of singing traditionally heard in the Balkans; texturally, one might think of the songs sung by Carpathian peasants (especially the swineherds!) recorded by Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály during the early 20th century. Instruments heard on Indonesia, Vol. 8 include drums, gongs, and the double flute, another parallel with traditional rural music of Southeastern Europe. Plaudits go to musicologist Philip Yampolsky for conducting more than ten years of intensive research and compiling such a vast body of field recordings. The entire series is uniformly excellent; for a well-rounded sampler, try Discover Indonesia, a diverse overview released in 2000. ~ arwulf arwulf
This and the next volume present music from Flores, a large, dry savanna island between Lombok and Timor in Indonesia's southern chain of islands. The island is 85% Roman Catholic, but it is highly fragmented ethnically and its music expresses a wide variety of approaches to harmony and polyphony. The vocal music is particularly interesting and dominates this volume.
The first five selections come from the Sikka Regency in the island's central region. Over the tok-tok-tok of halved coconut shells, a single thin voice leads a powerful male chorus in a communal work song. In another work song, a second undulating part recalls the softer vocal ostinato singing heard in Bali's famous monkey chant, kecak. Two pieces feature drums, most notably a high energy drum and gong piece that accompanies showy recreational dancing. A final work song involves an advancing line of 40 male and female workers. In their layered singing, sharp voices cut through a chorus of cool, horn-like ohh-ing to create a rich texture.
The microtonal vocal singing of East Flores' Tanjung Bunga region is one of the revelations of the series. This region is the scene of Indonesia's earliest Catholic conversions, and of many small wars, but no known history explains why the region has vocal music startlingly similar to South Slavic singing. The
