New Country, Vol. 8 CD music
$13.09 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's ...

New Country, Vol. 8 album
$7.69 The RCA Country Legends series -- previously on the reactivated Buddha label, but as of 2002, showing up on BMG Heritage, since Buddha no longer exists -- stands out because the compilers don't open up Joel Whitburn's Billboard chart books and copy down the 16 biggest songs. Instead, they alter their choices slightly, skewing it to a particular sound or style, usually telling a better story about the actual sound and intent of the artist than if they were just concerned with hits. That's even true with Porter Wagoner's volume of RCA Country Legends -- it may be missing a number of big hits (how could it not be; he was one of the biggest stars of his era, continually hitting the charts for year upon year), but ...

| | Buried Inside Chronoclast CD (2005)
New Country, Vol. 8 music CDs
$10.45 Progressive rock and hardcore are two styles that no one involved in their original inception probably ever expected to see merge; and yet Canada's Buried Inside take part in an ever growing legion of bands (Mastodon, Isis, Pelican, Pushing Up Daisies, to name but a few) doing just that. Taking their basic cues from all of the above and, naturally, the daddies of it all, Neurosis, Buried Inside have concocted a single, uninterrupted 40-minute piece of music for their third album, 2005's Chronoclast. Consumed with the all-binding concept of time (as one might have guessed), its ten tracks were obviously devised as separate units to begin with, but are presented in such unified fashion here that it's almost impossible to sort them out without one's CD or computer player's assistance. Nor does one feel the need to -- even with singer ...
| | KT Sullivan Fine Romance: A Dorothy Fields Songbook CD (2006)
New Country, Vol. 8 songs
$11.59 Female, and not a few male, singers have long delighted in the witty, intimate lyrics of Dorothy Fields, who wrote primarily for Broadway and Hollywood from the 1920s to the 1970s, producing numerous standards. Since Fields was so good at writing songs about the war between the sexes (including her efforts for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the film Swing Time), it is only appropriate that K.T. Sullivan awards co-billing to her piano accompanist Mark Nadler on this collection of Fields songs, not only duetting with him on several selections, but also letting him sing solo on four. Some of these songs are so familiar ("I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "I'm in the Mood for Love," "On the Sunny Side of the Street") that they have to be reimagined to be made fresh, and Sullivan and Nadler have been bold in bringing them back to life. In particular, Nadler combines "I'm in the Mood for Love" with the rhythm number "Digga Digga Doo" in order to find a new way to interpret ...
