The Tarriers released their self-titled debut in 1957, one year before the folk revival exploded. Ironically, there's even a recording of "Tom Dooley" on The Tarriers, the song that made the Kingston Trio folk superstars. The group did have a hit with "The Banana Boat Song" -- the first to do so -- but Harry Belafonte's version, "Day-O," became even bigger. The stars simply failed to line up for Eric Darling, Bob Carey, and Alan Arkin. This will strike many as odd when the group's arrangements, choice of material, and presentation of songs like "Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill" and "Shadrack" are vigorous and lively. Indeed, the group's approach and bright interpretations aren't dissimilar to those the Kingston Trio would use the following year. While the unlucky Tarriers have been buried in obscurity, this reissue by Folk Era will give folk fans and music writers quite a bit to chew on. Even better, The Tarriers is fun to listen to. The young players pick up their banjos and guitars and offer fresh interpretations of "Trouble in Mind" and "Everybody Loves Saturday Night" that hold up well after 40 years. Dave Samuelson's liner notes provide a definitive guide to the ups and downs of the Tarriers' turbulent career. With the addition of two studio cuts and a number of live tracks, The Tarriers is folk revival classic. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
Among the more collectible folk albums of the late fifties is The Tarriers self-titled LP that was released in April of 1957. Nearly a year and a half before The Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley" swept to the top of the charts and turned the world of popular music on its ear, The Tarriers included an up tempo rendition of "Tom Dooley" on their debut LP along with a baker's dozen other songs that would become standards of the Folk Era yet to come. Propelled by their top charted hit, "The Banana Boat Song" (also included on the album), the Tarriers were in demand at clubs and concert halls, even appearing on Ed Sullivan's top rated TV show.

Tarriers album
$11.59 The Easy Riders' first two long-players assembled on one CD makes for a handy introduction to this unfairly overlooked folk trio -- it was a long way from this kind of pre-Kingston Trio folk ensemble to Bob Dylan, but it had to start somewhere, and it started with the Easy Riders. The material, a mix of folk, calypso, western, and sea shanties, with an uncommonly pretty blues ("So True Blues") somewhere in the middle for flavor, doesn't contain any surprises, except, perhaps, for the title ("Send for De Captain") on the trio's particular version of "Sloop John B," and the pleasantly upbeat rendition of "I Ride an Old Paint" -- the singing is pleasantly restrained, except where Terry Gilkyson opts to pull out the stops, his sweet tenor voice rising above the rest. The 12 tracks off of Wanderin': Folk Songs by the Easy Riders, which are weighted somewhat more toward blues (especially "Lonesome Whistle") ...
| | Very Best Of The Ames Brothers CD (1998)
Tarriers CD music
$15.09 Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1998, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
While modern-day audiences will perhaps have a tough time equating their old-time singing style with their massive success, this collection does a pretty fine job of putting it all in perspective. The Ames Brothers were the purveyors of strong, smooth vocal harmonies that soared, soothed, and came to national prominence, largely prospering in the pre-rock & roll times of the 1950s. Drawn entirely from their hitmaking days at RCA Victor (it omits their 1950 original of "Rag Mop," the group's first hit on Coral), this "straight from the master tapes" compilation runs chronologically from the Ames' 1953 signing with the label to their last charting record, 1960's "China Doll." With 17 of the 20 tracks aboard being chart entries (and ten of those landing in the Top 20), this is a most hit-laden package, their one MIA hit notwithstanding. There's a strong theory among musicologists that sibling harmony is the best ...
| | Moments To Remember: The Very Best Of The Four Lads CD (2000)
Tarriers music CDs
$16.99 The myriad of Four-something vocal quartets in the '50s tend to get lumped together even though many of them had very distinct styles. From the microtonal complexity of the Four Freshmen to the collegiate humor of the Four Preps, they were as individual as any other groups around. In the case of the Four Lads, it's a little harder to pinpoint their sound because it changed throughout the course of their career. They started out strongly influenced by the black jubilee gospel quartets, recorded a series of popular novelty records under the auspices of Mitch Miller, then settled into interpreting pop standards and adult ballads in their rich, unadorned style. The Four Lads were probably closest in sound to the Ames Brothers by the end of the '50s, but their Canadian heritage and unique influences gave them a subtly distinct character. Moments to Remember: The Very Best of the Four Lads is an excellent 21-track collection of their original hit recordings beginning with their first hit, "The Mocking Bird" from 1952, and following through to the end of their chart career in 1959. ...
| | Hard To Find 45'S On CD, Vol. 2: 1961-64 CDs (1996)
Tarriers songs
$12.85 The second installment of the Hard to Find 45's series is, like the first, a wide assortment of Top 40 hits, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. Whereas the first volume was devoted to material from 1955-1960, this goes into the next era (1961-1964), and though it's pretty pop-inclined, there's a good deal of diversity. There's doo wop verging on soul by the Stereos ("I Really Do Love You," the Flares' "Foot Stompin'," Clyde McPhatter's "Lover Please"), girl-sung teen idol pop (Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him," Marcie Blane's "Bobby's Girl"), the poppiest brand of girl group sounds (the Murmaids' "Popsicles and Icicles," Diane Renay's "Navy Blue," the Caravelles' "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry"), the foreign novelty (Singing Nun's "Dominique"), middle-of-the-road pop (Joe Dowell's "Wooden Heart"), forgotten British Invasion/middle-of-the-road pop/folk-country (the Bachelors' "Diane"), and a hot rod tune (the Hondells' "Little Honda") whose relatively hard-driving toughness is almost out of character on this CD. As far as hits that are really hard to hear on oldies radio or buy on CD in some fashion, there aren't that many. But some of the tracks that really don't show up much on whatever channels include the rockabilly pop ...
| | Cameo Parkway 1959-1964: The Best Of Bobby Rydell CD (2005)
Tarriers album
$9.89 Collecting recordings from throughout the first five years of early-1960s heartthrob Bobby Rydell's career, this compilation features his first hits, like the Doc Pomus composition "I Dig Girls," standards like "That Old Black Magic," a wide variety of Brill Building classics like "The Third House (In From the Right)," and one early Lennon and McCartney composition, "A World Without Love." Significantly, Rydell's version of the latter song lost out to Peter and Gordon's British Invasion hit--the onetime teen idol was one of many U.S. pop stars supplanted by Beatlemania.

| | Cameo Parkway 1959-1963: The Best Of Chubby Checker CD (2005)
Tarriers CD music
$10.09 The Chubby Checker installment in the Cameo Parkway series, an excellent string of discs highlighting the label's artists from the late 1950s and '60s, will disappoint neither long-time fans nor those looking for a compilation of Chubby's biggest hits. Naturally, "The Twist" is here, as are all of the singer's follow-up cash-ins ("Let's Twist Again;" "Slow Twistin,'" etc.), and a host of other dance-craze songs ("The Hucklebuck;" "Limbo Rock," "The Fly"). The mood is light, buoyant, and fun throughout, as anyone familiar with any of Checker's singles would assume. Excellent sound and liner notes make this a fine choice for anyone ...

| | Bradley Walker Highway Of Dreams CD (2006)
Tarriers album
$15.05 Bradley Walker has been singing country music since his toddlerhood, and throughout his youth he performed in a variety of country and bluegrass bands. His debut as a solo artist finds him joined by a rather awe-inspiring array of guest artists who include Rhonda Vincent, Vince Gill, rising star Alecia Nugent, producer Carl Jackson and many other bluegrass and traditional country luminaries, and performing songs in that sort of mostly-acoustic-and-bluegrassy-but-with-drums style that is becoming increasingly popular. What's significant about this album is not the fact that Walker was born with muscular dystrophy and performs from a wheelchair, but that he sings like a cross between George Jones and Brad Paisley, in a warm, rich baritone voice that alternately nails and caresses the notes he sings. Traditionalism cuts both ways, of course: one of country music's great traditions is the marriage of sweet, hooky melodies with stomping honky tonk grooves, and Walker celebrates that tradition on such gems as the especially Jones-esque "When I'm Hurtin'" and the gorgeous "Lost at Sea." Unfortunately, there are some other country music traditions that are less worth celebrating, and those are celebrated here as well: the well-established tradition of overly cute ...
