Vol. 3 of the Nordic Roots series, highlighting releases from the Northside label, remains, as they say, "cheaper than food," and though you might not be able to make a sandwich out of it, it's certainly tasty. There's a good pick of tracks from the label's releases; together, these tracks give an idea of both the similarities and diversities of Nordic music. It might seem like a jump from the neo-electronics of Gjallarhorn's "Suvetar, Goddess of Spring" to Harv's acoustic "The Lever," but there's a feeling that draws them close together. Apart from the catalog tracks making an excellent introduction to the genre, the pleasant surprise comes from the bonus -- four live cuts from the label's Nordic Roots Festival, held each April in Minneapolis. The wonderful Väsen (with Harv), Swap, Ranarim, and Hedningarna get to strut their stuff in live performance, and show that none of them are instrumental slouches. Much of the music here is instrumental, but it's none the worse for that, and throws the singers into high relief, such as Värttinä and their incredible high harmonies, or the golden throat of Garmarna's Emma Härdelin. The whole package shows what a niche Northside has created, and that Nordic music continues to hold a real gold mine of riches. ~ Chris Nickson

Nordic Roots 3 CD music
$17.69 "These guys ROCK! Definitley one of the tightest bands I have seen live." Billy Zero, XM radio Unsigned Program Director "This is a tremendous effort from a phenomenal band. Incredible!" Music Monthly October 2005The Doug Segree Band take it to another level on the stage. The band features an all-star cast with world renowned percussionist Victor Williams (John Mclaughlin, Dennis Chambers), saxophonist Scott Paddock (Little Feat, Bela Fleck), guitarist extraordinaire Dan Leonard (Deanna Bogart), bassist Steve Zerlin (Facing East, Jerry Garcia) and drummer John Thomakos (Carl Filipiak). One Night Only is a live recording taken from a performance in May 2005 at Maryland Hall For the Creative Arts. The recording captures incredible musicians playing great songs. There are plenty of groovin jams that you would expect from any great live band. There is no question of Doug Segree's genuine enthusiasm and love for the music he makes. In August 2004 the Mid-Atlantic based Music Monthly said "Doug Segree is one of our brightest stars." A singer/songwriter out of Annapolis, MD, he speaks to his audience through acoustic guitars and spirited vocals. People are drawn to the melodic nature of the music - great songs about life, sung with conviction and performed with true passion. He began his music career as a regular performer at local college bars in and around Gainesville, Florida while receiving his MBA at the University of Florida in 1994. The world of business took a backseat as he began fulfilling his love for writing and performing his own music that has taken him to stages from New York to Florida for the past decade. Doug was recently voted best solo artist in 2004-5 by What's Up Magazine. He has successfully recorded and released three CD's over the past six years with his latest, Come Again, released in June of 2004 on the independent label Kid Arnold Records. Taking ...
