Personnel: Gary Allan (vocals, guitar); Jake Kelly, Joe Manuel, John Willis (acoustic guitar); Brent Rowan (electric guitar); Robby Turner (steel guitar); Hank Singer (mandolin, fiddle); Steve Nathan (keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass); Chad Cromwell (drums); Harry Stinson, John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). Producers: Tony Brown, Mark Wright, Odie Blackmon. Gary Allan's fourth album honors traditional honky tonk and American music without dripping into the sentimentality that bogs down so many of his contemporaries. The singing is better here than on anything he's ever done, and the song selection -- ranging from a Todd Snider cover to a nice Bruce Robison-penned closer called "What Would Willie Do" -- is sharp and smart. Alright Guy presents a look at country music that bucks tradition while keeping the faith. ~ Michael Gallucci In today's climate of disposable, prepackaged country stars, fans can be forgiven for not expecting very much of a performer hyped as "the surfing cowboy." Yet Gary Allan, a native Californian with a clear affection and aptitude for the music of Merle Haggard and George Strait, is more than a tag line and a pretty face. On ALRIGHT GUY, as on his breakthrough 1999 smash SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK, Allan transcends the PR to produce a pleasing hybrid of modern, radio-friendly country and the genre's more traditional elements. Allan has an appealing taste for the songs of country's underground songwriters: on ALRIGHT GUY he covers two by Bruce Robison (including "What Would Willie Do?" a song that seeks life advice from Willie Nelson) and one each by Jim Lauderdale ("What's On My Mind") and Todd Snider ("Alright Guy"). He imbues his more mainstream efforts ("Man to Man," "Man of Me") with an authenticity drawn from a combination of raw talent and deep, heartfelt country roots. $14.29 UK pressing. Volume 5 in this series. Further details TBA once information becomes available. Trikont. 2005.
This is easily the most satisfying volume in the Trikont Cajun and zydeco series for anybody interested in the roots of the music's modern sound. Mostly recorded in the '60s with a couple of '70s numbers thrown in for measure, it contains 18 cuts, and there isn't a dud in the bunch. The well-known artists represented are Beausoleil, Johnnie Allan, and Belton Richard. But there are obscure finds here as well: there's Cookie & the Cupcakes and their Cajun read of "Mathilda," Rufus Jagneaux, and Doris Matte. The set kicks off with Allan doing a fine version of Chuck Berry's "The Promised Land," guitars are fiery and twanging all over the place, there's nary an accordion anywhere. It's the rhythm section that makes Berry's rock anthem into a Cajun stomp. Beausoleil's "Zydeco Gris-Gris" cruises at flying altitude and features a breathy female vocal, half spoken/half sung in lusty Creole French. The accordion, fiddles, and electric guitars all swirl around her in cut time, making this a shimmying dance tune if there ever was one. Things really get sweaty when Clifton Chenier and Belton Richard ...
| | Old Crow Medicine Show Big Iron World CD (2006)
Alright Guy
$10.39 Personnel: Ketcham Secor (vocals, guitar, fiddle, harmonica); Kevin Hayes , Willie Watson (vocals, guitar); Critter Fuqua (vocals, slide guitar, banjo); David Rawlings (12-string guitar); Morgan Jahnig (upright bass); Gillian Welch (drums). Recording information: Woodland Sound Studios, Nashville, TN. Photographer: Lewis Hine. The Nashville bluegrass band's second album, which is produced by David Rawlings and features the alt country artist Gillian Welch on drums, is a collection whose sepia-toned lyrics lament the passing of hallowed old habits and customs. Tracks like the Depression-era "Let It Alone" conjure a bygone era when peoples' lives were naturally intertwined, and the band does its best to preserve equally ancient songs, like the political rallying cry of "Union Maid" and the raucous 1920s jug band hit "Cocaine Habit," for the present generation of country listeners. The set's timeless quality is heightened as much by the Old Crow Medicine Show's determinedly old-world attitudes to performance as by its traditional instrumentation and its singers' authentic-sounding voices. Similar to their first album, Big Iron World sees Old Crow Medicine Show draw upon the spirit of old-timey American string band music, adding a surprisingly refreshing and youthful flair that breathes new life into what's traditional as well as harnessing a sound of their own. The group once again teamed up with David Rawlings ...
