Pink Lady And Jeff DVD

 Last gasp of 70s cheese
I bought this mostly to laugh at it, its reputation for being so-bad-it's-good is well deserved, yet I mostly come away with a feeling of what might've been. Mie and Kei (Pink Lady) are great performers and gorgeous women, if this show had been more daring and hip, and also let them perform their songs in Japanese, they could've been huge in America. But as it is the show is a weird 70s/80s hybrid - Carter and Nixon jokes and cheesy disco production numbers mixed with a comedic sensibility similar to early 80s SNL, plus pre-MTV "New Wave" music videos. Warning: best in small doses.

 Not enough of Jim Varney, but...
My interest in getting this DVD set was Jim Varney's being in them. He appears in episodes 2 through 6, popping up in various skits (most in the last 2 episodes). I am glad I got it, but I really wish it had been "Jim and Pink Lady" instead of Jeff! If you are a fan of Jim's do get this- there is so little of him out there other that "Ernest"-a character that haunted him. There is a lot of other talent in these episodes- just look at the guest stars- and "Pink Lady" singers are most excellent- so for a variety show it is pretty decent. I just get so frustrated when I see Jim under-used- which he is in these- but, as I said, I'm still glad I discovered the set.
