This 1971 release was the first "real" Gong album (1970's MAGICK BROTHER was really Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth with friends, recorded before the band's official debut). It's a psychedelic/space-rock classic, hinting at the conceptual/musical heights reached by the forthcoming "Radio Gnome Trilogy" but characterized by harder-edged riffing and fewer ethereal moments (Steve Hillage and Tim Blake had not yet come aboard).
Allen's underground-oriented psycho-sexual, beatnik lyrics are a winning combination of wisdom and whimsy, but it's the music that makes CAMEMBERT. Allen's patented "glissando guitar" style (a spacy, flowing sound achieved with delay effects and a slide) puts the band in early Pink Floyd territory, as do the long, atmospheric jams. There's also a distinct jazz influence in both Pip Pyle's bop-inspired drumming and Didier Malherbe's freaky sax. These elements combined with Gilli Smyth's ambient/erotic "space whisper" backing vocals and Allen's winning tunesmithery to create some of the least pretentious art-rock ever heard.
UK reissue of their third album, recorded in 1971. A skillful blend of jazz-influenced space rock, unconventional psychedlia and bizarre experimentation, it includes their classic'Foghat Digs Holes In Space'. 2001 release. Standard jewelcase.

| Camembert Electrique Music Camembert Electrique Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) The return to progressive music I do realize these albums are thirty-plus years old. And I do realize this music has a niche on satellite radio. But my god it would be lovely to hear this type of music on commercial-band FM radio (not just college-band NPR fill-ins.) What the hell did all that synthesizer technology produce anyhow? (DX7's,
Synclavier's, Nordlead's, VL1's...What is the Andromeda 6 for?) Imagine a return to virtuosity and the end of three minute angst, the end of the Star Trek ripoffs and the return to reading novels like War and Peace. The return to progressive imagination. Not for nothin', Wilco's A Ghost is Born is a good album however, it doesn't hold a candle to Gong's Camebert Electrique.

Trippy One of the trippiest albums ever made...now in CD quality...wooooooowww!! Submitted by dragster (Sydney, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Back when UK hash was $40 an ounce, IT magazine was, and Michael Moorcock traipsed with Hawkwind, this album was a great trippy experimental synth alternative. Camembert Electrique showed me Gong could expand horizons and compliment Umma Gumma, Phallus Dei, Hot Rats, and Soft Machine's Third. My electrical Camembert ergot test says this one deserves five powerful microdots. Submitted by US teenager who at the time lived in (London, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Le album tres incredible! Along with Hawkwind, Gong were the pioneers of synth-space-rock-with-the-help-of-certain-substances, and this, their third offering, is arguably their best.
It's early days for the band, and the dynamic lead guitar of Steve Hillage and the incredible Tim Blake synthesiser orchestra are yet to appear, however band leader, guitarist and songwriter Daevid Allen's whimsical compositions are at their best.
All the tunes are absolutely top-notch, however the jazz-funky "Fohat digs holes in space" with Allen's trademark glissando guitar screaming alongside furious drums and bass has to be the top moment on the LP.
Make this your first stroll into the Gong musical field! Submitted by a reviewer (Somewhere in England.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Camembert Electrique album
$9.35 In retrospect, it's hard to believe both FLYING TEAPOT and its successor ANGELS EGG were released within months of each other in 1973. Each is an elaborate, distinct musical statement. ANGEL'S EGG is the second installment in Gong's legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy," and it expands upon the ground broken by TEAPOT admirably. Though the band was still pursuing their spacy art-rock direction, the sound here became simultaneously jazzier and more ethereal. Didier Malherbe's sax and flute took a more active role, as did Steve Hillage's ...

They absolutely used up themselves the 80er-Metal. Mixed with modern elements, this disk slams from the front to in the back. That mix from strong and in parts dark sound leaves open no desires. From time to time it becomes even somewhat doomig, before there is then again the full Thrash board. The salient voice of singer Ronnie settles in the Gehörgängen, and the whole album works ...
