Ask anybody what the most impressive musicians sound like and odds are they'll say they sound nothing like their influences. Which might imply that Bristol-bred Way out West -- being submerged in both trip-hop and Madchester -- demand the utmost respect for making a glittering, expressive trance record. Such is the case for most of Intensify, only if one takes a blind eye to the more glaring dips into transcendental self-importance. Certainly, a huge majority of the songs here undulate with a swish of snug synths and countryside astral works -- the Enigma techno house of "Hypnotise" or "Secret" translate eccentric elements into militant house stompers -- but when guest vocalists like Kirsty Hawkshaw (remembered most for her Opus III project and her role with BT) try to yank the experience into something more conventionally "moving," the album founders with pomposity. Still, not many progressive trance records would sample Coldcut's "Autumn Leaves" ("The Fall") or sound like a lost Borg finding itself at Gatecrasher ("Shark Hunt"). ~ Dean Carlson

Number Ones replaces Design of a Decade, released 14 years prior. Excepting the new song "Make Me" (hard neo-disco/funk excellence), each song here was indeed a number one hit on Billboard's various charts, though "Got 'Til It's Gone" sneaks through a side door via the Japanese charts. One number one, oddly, is missing: "So Excited," a perfectly fine, 2006 single which topped the club chart. This set is more thorough with 1986-1996, too, adding Herb Alpert's "Diamonds" -- which would not have been out of place on Control, given Jam & Lewis' production and Janet's precedence over Alpert's trumpet -- as well as "The Best Things in Life Are Free" (with Luther Vandross) -- all the smashes off janet., and "Scream" (with her brother). Say what you want about Janet peaking with Jam & Lewis during the latter half of the '80s -- to be fair, the argument is valid -- but she did rack up a career's worth of solid hits during the years that followed. It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits -- part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series -- finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White's heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market. It includes the edited single versions, not the full-length album tracks, which actually makes for a more digestible introduction to White's achievements. Like his forebear Isaac Hayes, White was not just a deep-voiced crooner, but a talented producer and arranger who'd spent years honing his craft behind the scenes in the industry. And like Hayes, White spent a great deal of time setting up moods on his albums, using lush, sweeping orchestrations to build very gradually to climaxes. (Actually, that probably explains a good deal of his effectiveness.) But White was not simply a Hayes disciple; his swirling productions were less complex than Hayes', but more in tune with the emerging disco sound, which certainly boosted his popularity. Nigerian vocalist Sade Adu has carved out a cosmpolitan niche for herself over the past decade, gathering together elements of cool jazz, samba, reggae, funk and pop all under the pastoral umbrella of her suede-and-velvet voice. A pop stylist with a musical universe all her own, Sade has endured and matured over the past decade, seemingly unaffected by changes in taste and fashion--a movement unto herself.
As her most recent single (Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone To Love" from the PHILADELPHIA soundtrack) illustrates, Sade's coy caressing voice speaks more of commitment and trust, of relationships in flux ("Nothing Can Come Between Us") than of the heat of the moment: from the the coy duplicity of "Smooth Operator" to the positive reinforcement of "The Sweetest Taboo" and the sweet ambiguities of "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."

With his rough-hewn voice, edgy delivery, and hard-hitting lyrical scenarios, hip-hop icon Busta Rhymes has never been one to tread softly. GENESIS is no exception; on this album, Busta pretty much keeps to his strengths, spitting out tongue-twisting rhymes with an almost startling facility atop beats that are both texturally inviting and danceably funky. Despite his no-holds-barred style, though, there's more to Busta than thug-life/gangsta scenes. Anybody who can pull off a tune like "Pass the Courvosier" and make it a duet with P. Diddy no less, has obviously been living the high life long enough to know that hooks and accessibility are of equal import to the upfront style for which Rhymes is famous.
